What to Expect
Gain an overall understanding of the main periods and styles of London’s extraordinary architecture during this private walking tour.

Constantly changing throughout history, London’s topography and architecture are unique to that of any other European capital city. Your guide will teach you about the main points in London’s architectural history, spanning from the Norman times to the very recent past. By walking around the central areas of Holborn and Bloomsbury, you will get to know the main features of London's buildings through the ages, including the sources of their styles, the building materials used and their practical function in the urban environment.

The tour starts at The Hold Bell Tavern and from here your guide will take you to the first stop: Temple Church. Built by the Knights Templar, the Temple Church is the shape of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It is likely the best representation of medieval London architecture and the ideal place to discuss the passage between Norman-Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

Dependant on opening times, you may then visit Prince Henry’s Room or the Staple Inn. Both are fine examples of the Elizabethan and Jacobean timber-framed houses that survived the Great Fire of 1666. You will step into the Staple Inn and see the great hall, which is a typical feature of homes and mansions of this time period.

Examining the Jacobean period and the introduction of Classical architectural language in London will be facilitated by a visit to Lindsey House. This structure is the only surviving house of London’s ambitious house-building project on Lincoln’s Inn Field. This housing project was one of the first examples of land development in the West End of London.

Your tour will cross the lively area of Covent Garden and go through the British Museum in order to reach Bloomsbury. Of particular interest in Bloomsbury is Bedford Square, one of the most finely preserved examples of a Georgian square. It is a typical 18th century attempt to reach perfect symmetry and uniformity in the planning of urban spaces.

The walk will conclude with an examination of the Russell Hotel, one of the most eccentric expressions of Victorian architecture.

This enlightening and privately guided tour will be a treat for architecture fans and novices alike.
