This 5-day trek travels from Sembalun Lawang to Senaru via the crater rim of Mount Rinjani and the caldera lake of Segara Anak. Walking through some of the nature reserve’s 41,330 hectares of unique tropical flora and fauna, you will experience a picturesque haven of magnificent waterfalls, hot springs, and lush jungle. It’s not an easy journey, and requires a good level of physical fitness. But for those up for the challenge, it’s an unforgettable experience.

The route is designed for adventurers who want to take their time in Rinjani. With 4 days of walking, you will have the freedom to enjoy every aspect of this special mountain.

Day 1: Sembalun
Transfer from Senggigi or Lombok International Airport to Sembalun for your overnight stay in an hotel with panoramic views of Rinjani.

Day 2: Rinjani Rim (B, L, D)
In the early morning you’ll need to register at the Rinjani Information Centre (RIC) in Sembalun Lawang. Here, you can visit the Volcanology Center to check the seismograph, learn about the volcano, and discover how the caldera and Segara Anak lake were formed.

The RIC will prepare a briefing for you, describing the route details, local traditions, and things you might see en route. You will also be informed about rubbish management and safety procedures.

The trek then starts with a gentle ascent through open grassland of grazing cattle. After approximately 3 hours, you will reach Pos 2 Tengengean (4,920 feet/1,500 meters), from where you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Rinjani’s summit. Start a steep 3.5-hour climb towards the campsite on the crater rim. Along the way you will see pine-like casuarina’s, wild pigs, and, if you’re lucky, macaque monkeys.
