Climb Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia’s 2nd highest volcano, on a 2-day mountain trek from Senaru on the island of Lombok. Peer into the blue-green mineral rich caldera lake of Segara Anak, and camp under a tropical night sky full of stars.
What to Expect
Lombok’s sacred volcano, Gunung Rinjani, soars 12,221 feet (3,726 meters) above sea level. The 2nd highest volcano in Indonesia, it attracts thousands of trekkers and climbers annually. Full of unique tropical flora and fauna, experience a picturesque haven of magnificent waterfalls, hot springs, and lush jungle on a 2-day trek.
The shorter trek is ideal for those pushed for time. Starting and ending at Senaru, it provides spectacular views of Lake Segara Anak within the volcano crater. It’s not an easy journey, and requires a level of physical fitness. But for those up for the challenge, it’s an unforgettable experience.
Day 1: Meet and Greet Services - Trek to Rim Crater <em(B, L, D)</em>
Following an early morning pick-up from hotels in the Senggigi and Mataram area, transfer to Senaru and meet your trekking team. Your guide will arrange your National Park entry ticket and give you a short briefing, describing the route, rubbish management, and safety procedures.
The first hours of the trek will climb steeply through thick tropical forest, rich in flora, bird life, and a variety of butterflies. Look out for orchids, and - if you are lucky - rare black ebony leaf monkey, known locally as “lutung.” Rest stops are taken en route and at the Montong Satas shelter at 4,920 feet (1,500 meters). Listen as your guide relates village stories and local legends.
Depending on your fitness level (and weather conditions) the night camp is either made in the forest at Mondokon Lolak ("Position 3") after about 5 hours of climbing, or you can continue for another couple of hours through grassy meadows to the crater rim. Enjoy sweeping views across Lake Segara Anak to the summit of Mount Rinjani. Within the crater lies Mount Baru, an active volcano that dramatically erupted in 1994.
Day 2: Trek Down to Senaru - Transfer <em(B, L)</em>
Watch the sunrise at the crater rim, after a pre-dawn 2-hour climb (for those camping at Mondokon Lolak). Soak up the stunning views before your descent along a trail that leads back to Senaru through grassland and the shade of a tropical forest.
Approximately 7 hours from the rim, you should arrive, safe but weary, at the Rinjani Trek Centre. A transfer will be organized to take you back to your hotel in the Senggigi and Mataram areas.
