Top 5 things to do on a Lisbon walking tour

Lisbon's colorful history is still evident in its grand monuments and maze of streets that veer between the quaint and rustic. Here are the best places to go on any city walking tour.

Bairro Alto

The "Upper Neighborhood" was formed in the 16th century and, with its picturesque streets and elegant houses overlooking the rest of the city, remains its most charming district.

Belém Tower

An icon of Portugal's "Age of Discovery," this 16th century coastal tower formed both the keystone of Lisbon's maritime defense system and a ceremonial gateway for important visitors.

Lisbon Cathedral

Construction on Lisbon's oldest church began in 1147, but once they got started they found it hard to stop! Today the cathedral is a mix of architectural styles added through ages.

Lisbon's oldest district survived the great earthquake of 1755, and so retains much of its Moorish fishing-village charm. Come back at night to enjoy the city's best bars!

Rossio Square

Lisbon's historic main square has long been the center of public life, hosting everything from celebrations to executions. It's also home to the D. Maria II National Theater.

Planning Your Visit

How do the free tours work?

Free walking tours are a great way to see Lisbon on a tight budget, and are often surprisingly good! Don't forget, however, that your guide is still trying to make a living. Bring some cash with you in case they deserve a good tip.

What about food tours?

Seen Lisbon's sights and ready to taste its delights? Food tours provide a popular way of seeing the city from a local's perspective, taking in a choice of favorite restaurants, food markets, and top-notch wine stores. Or if you're not done with the sightseeing yet, you can even choose a tour that offers both!

What People Are Saying About Lisbon

a wonderful, informative, enjoyable morning

This is not my first Get Your Guide activity, and so far they have never let me down. We were met by Margarita our guide for the morning promptly and once we had all assembled and briefly introduced ourselves, which broke the ice we got started. She looked after us with a real warmth, answered questions and talked and walked us through Rossio, Chiado and Alfama. We were not rushed at all - it was like taking a friendly ramble through a beautiful city. I would not hesitate to recommend our activity and Get Your Guide

Perfect walking food tour to tick all the boxes

Our guide Rebecca was perfect, very knowledgeable and funny! We had a variety of food and drink items we would have missed if not for this tour. Great group of people in our tour helped to make it a fun evening!

If you don't do anything else in Lisbon, do a Free Walking Tour.

Our tour guide was Ricardo (born in Manchester but raised in the Algarve). He was a very pleasant, funny, intelligent and informative young man. We could never have gained a feel for this beautiful City, which we did having gone on this Tour, if we had chosen instead to read a guide book. We enjoyed this Tour so much we signed up and paid for the Tour of the Alfama, which was also excellent. Highly recommend!

A brilliant tour led by an outstanding personality.

Our guide Ronnie Smith was simply the best. She had a large group of different nationalities captivated by her knowledge of and passion for the city, her excellent commentary with not a wasted word and her entertaining interactive presentation. We enjoyed a memorable afternoon and learnt a lot about Lisbon and its history.
