Full description
On this full-day tour travel to Azeitão, an area that’s well known for its wines and cheeses. Visit some of the region's top wine cellars and taste fine wines. The first stop is at the renowned cellars of José Maria da Fonseca, where you’ll learn about the winery’s history and sample some of its wines. Next visit Quinta de Alcube, a wine cellar owned by a family for over a century. It is a traditional cellar that produces only 250,000 bottles a year. The wines are sold directly to customers, making it difficult to find them in shops. In your third and final experience, taste up to 3 more wines in a mid-sized winery, or even the “Mother House” of the wine region, where you can see what most of the 21 different wineries produce in the region. You will also sample some traditional locally-produced cheese, bread, and other goods. In addition to all the tastings, marvel at the views of the Arrábida Natural Park and its mountain range.

João picked us up close to our Airbnb. Then we drove round about 45 minutes to the first vineyard/museum. We were shown around and learned about the history of the company (7 generations) and how the vineyard is making wine. Afterwards we had a wine tasting with two wines. The second spot was a farm where we saw cork trees, tasted grapes from the bush and tried 5 local wines. The last stop was a village that acts as a storage for local producers. Here we tried another 5 wines and had a great goat cheese plate. You are not forced or animated at any stage of the trip to purchase the wine. It's your personal choice. João is a very talkative person. We learned a lot about wines from him, but also Portuguese olive oil, his personal story and wine-production efforts. He's a really great guy and we totally recommend the trip. The whole trip was covid19 regulations conform. A small tip - take some water with you because there was none offered with the wine tasting.

Joao runs a great tour, a little different than your typical wine tour. He puts a lot of effort so you can understand the history of wine making in this region and connects it with history of the country. He also uses nice, quiet and beautiful wineries, avoiding the crowded touristy ones. He even slightly adjusts the tastings to your preferences. He is VERY knowledgeable, and has a tendency to give more detail than you might need; but you’ll walk away having tasted some great wines and knowing a lot!

    Fantastic experience

We spent a great day with our guide João touring the Setúbal wine region. João is super friendly, knowledgeable about history and wine making, and most importantly very passionate in introducing what he knows to us, including travel tips which prove to be super helpful. He is very accommodating to our needs and our knowledge of wines. The selection of wineries and wines tasted are a good mix of what’s representive in the region, and are arranged in a way that is very educational. We have learned a lot, thanks to the program as well as voice over by João. Definitely among the best wine tasting tours we have attended.
