Full description

Explore the history of Portugal on a tour of Évora and the Megaliths of the Cromeleque dos Almendres. Following pickup from your hotel in Lisbon, make your way to Évora, the historic capital of the Alentejo.

Start the day with a tour of the Almendres Cromlech. Older than Stonehenge, this megalithic complex reveals some of the secrets of ancient civilizations and their knowledge of astronomy. Admire the circle of stones, mysteriously aligned with the sun and stars.

Next, explore the UNESCO-classified city center of Évora. See remnants from Roman through Renaissance times. Visit the Temple of Diana and learn how cork is extracted from Cork Oak Trees. Visit the medieval Évora Cathedral and climb to the roof to admire the golden plains surrounding the city. Continue to the Renaissance Church of St. Francis to see the Chapel of Bones, covered in human skulls and bones, before returning to Lisbon.

It was a good day and guide was good. His English was not the best and sometimes hard to understand. I wish he had some type of microphone when speaking in the van while driving. It was hard to hear with all the traffic noises . As we were driving through Lisbon it would have been nice if certain landmarks had been pointed out.

Our guide Nono was very experienced and he told us a lot of information on cork trees. He planned every detail in our trip carefully so that we could avoid the crowds. He also added some points in our itinerary like the miniature Portugal museum and cork factory. We enjoyed the trip so much!

Our guide NuNu was great at communicating and relating historical perspectives throughout the tour. Very nice experience….. his lunch suggestion in Evora was just wonderful. Loved the combination of seeing and learning about the monoliths and cork trees and then also the wonderful history of Evora and the bone chapel! Wonderful Day… Thanks NuNu!
