On this day tour, we set off from Lisbon towards Montemor-o-Novo Castle, a medieval structure that dominates the Alentejo landscape. As we explore the castle, we'll discover its historical importance and enjoy the magnificent views over the hills and fields of the region. This initial stop allows you to travel back in time, where you can imagine the lives of the inhabitants and the knights who passed through.
Next, we head to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Visitação, located on a hill with breathtaking views. This small church is a place of peace, much loved by the local population, with simple decoration typical of the Alentejo. The tiles that cover its interior walls are of great beauty and reflect the atmosphere of devotion and religious tradition in the region.
In Montemor-o-Novo, we will also visit the Plansel winery, where we will have a fascinating insight into the production process of the famous Alentejo wines. Although a wine tasting is not included, the guided tour of the winery offers an opportunity to learn about winemaking techniques and the ageing process, as well as the importance of the Alentejo terroir in the quality of the wines. This place is an excellent way to understand how winemaking is part of the Alentejo's identity.
For lunch, the group will be welcomed at the A Ribeira restaurant, famous for its unique tradition of "singing the menu". Here, the menu is presented in an original way, with the staff singing the list of dishes available, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere. The menu includes typical dishes from Alentejo cuisine, such as migas à alentejana, roast lamb and more. This lunch offers an unforgettable experience and an authentic taste of the local cuisine.
After lunch, the tour continues to Évora, a historic city with a vast cultural heritage. The first stop is the Capela dos Ossos, a unique and intriguing chapel lined with human bones and skulls. This unique building makes us reflect on the fleetingness of life and is one of the most visited sites in the city. Next, we walk to the Temple of Diana, an impressive Roman temple that bears witness to Évora's importance in Roman times. Next door, Praça do Giraldo, the heart of the city, offers the perfect setting for a break and to explore some local craft stores, where you can find typical Alentejo souvenirs.
After a day full of culture, history and gastronomy, we return to Lisbon with the full Alentejo experience in our minds. This tour is ideal for those who want to explore the enchanting landscapes, rich history and genuine hospitality of this iconic region of Portugal.
