Full description

Spend a day in the Portuguese villages of Constância and Tomar to discover the history of the Knights Templar. Your journey will begin in Lisbon.

Tomar was the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world. The main monument of the city is the Tomar Convent which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A short distance from Tomar is the Almourol Castle. This emblematic monument was at one time controlled by the Knights Templar.

The Almourol Castle and the city of Tomar are perfect examples to understand the mystique of the Templars, men that were simultaneously Warrior Knights and monks that lived under a rigid military discipline, but at the same time with a great rigor in the spiritual life.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at one of two locations in central Lisbon, either Restauradores or Marquês de Pombal.

Ricky met us and quickly got on the road. He had an amplifier so all passengers could hear. He clearly knew his subject matter. The trip to Tomar was great and full of history. Followed by lunch and an excursion to another Templar castle. Would highly recommend.

Our guide was quite knowledgeable and had obviously done a lot of research on the Knights Templar and their history in Portugal. We very much enjoyed the convent and the church visit, and she gave us a lot of information about the history of the area as well as the Knights. She was very enthusiastic and quite personable, making our experience quite pleasant. We also had enough time to interact and get to know the other guests - it was a small group and we shared experiences with each other. She took us to a nice restaurant with very good food at the end of the tour. The only downside is that it takes about 1.5 hours there and back - and getting back at rush hour made for lots of traffic. But, we knew that before we booked and she kept us informed about what to expect during the ride to our first stop. If you have any interest in the Knights Templar and their history, take this tour.

Our guide Ricky was fantastic! Not all venues were available to walk through or see during our tour. It was disappointing , as it was not communicated in advnce. Experienced a bit of conflict with the on-line booking vs canceling cancelation guidelines. Things were resolved accordingly. Bad brakes in the van, made it a bit uncomfortable.
