Discover Wellington in Portugal and Peninsular War battlefields. Visit the Lines of Torres Vedras, a defensive military system secretly ordered by the 1st Duke of Wellington in the north of Lisbon at the beginning of the 19th century.
What to Expect
Strategically similar to the Maginot Line (20th Century), the Torres Vedras Lines (19th Century) are the work of the military genie of both Sir Arthur Wellington (later Duque of Wellington and Marquis of Torres Vedras) and the Portuguese engineer, Brigadier Neves Costa. An enormous set of fortifications distributed in three lines from the Atlantic Ocean to the river Tagus with an innovating communications system, assuring the defense of the city of Lisbon.
Visit the evocative exhibition (Torres Vedras Museum) of the Peninsular Wars (1807/1814). Then, make your way to the battle of Vimeiro interpretation center (where the fading of the Napoleon army in the hands of the joint Portuguese/ English army began or play a 9 hole golf course).
Before returning to the hotel, visit and taste wine at the Adega Mãe.
