Full description
Visit Évora, a Portuguese town classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a full-day tour from Lisbon. Évora is sometimes referred to as the "White City" and also "City Museum," because it dazzles its visitors with lush architectural and artistic monumental churches, historic squares, white houses, and narrow medieval streets. Évora invites you to discover a city that is synonymous of mix of cultures; from the Romans to the Arabs, Jews to Christians, all its traditions and expressions are clearly present here. On your small group trip to Évora, you will be picked up from your Lisbon hotel at 8:30 AM before setting out. After arrival, make your way to the historic city center. Évora was taken from the Moors and went on to become one of the most prosperous cities of the kingdom, especially during the Avis Dynasty (1385-1580). Next, visit the Roman Temple of Évora, often referred to as the Temple of Diana. It is a Corinthian-style temple, built in the early first century A.D. Continue on to the Chapel of Bones. It is a chapel located next to the Church of St. Francis, and its walls are all lined with human bones. After lunch, visit Évora Cathedral. This is a Romanesque-Gothic building and you can climb to the towers and go to the roof where you have amazing views over the city and the countryside. After leaving the city, continue to visit a wine farm, Here visit the facilities and learn about the manufacturing and packaging of wine. Then enjoy a wine and olive oil tasting (not included). On your way back to Lisbon, pass by Arraiolos, located about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) northwest of Évora. Visit the castle and the church of "Senhor dos Passos." Then learn about the famous Arraiolos carpets, wool rugs embroidered with the stitch of the same name, on a jute cloth made of cotton or linen. The knowledge of this craft has been passed from generation to generation in Arraiolos. You will return to Lisbon around 5:00 PM.

Our tour guide was replaced with one who does not often conduct this tour, apparently (Jose). We liked him very much! He was not quite as knowledgeable (understandably) as the regular guide. But he was polite, tried not to rush us, and took us places off the beaten path. However, the day required long periods in the car getting from one place to another and felt rushed for that reason. If the day had contained only Evora (staying longer there), the town with hilltop castle, and lunch, it would have been perfect. The wine tasting was nice but exhausting after the already-long day. Obviously, we booked a tour with "wine tasting" in the title, so that's on us! But we recommend designing an Evora day without the tasting, though I suppose the tasting is what kept the day cost effective. In any case, we had no time to decide whether to buy wine or not. Even with all dashing about, the tour went about 2 hours over its scheduled length.

Manuel was a fantastic tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and courteous. He made it a priority that we do what we wanted , as this toir was about us. We were shown many things on this tour, much more than I ever expected. I have booked many tours via Get Your Guide , and I have had many good guides. Manuel has been the best. Thanks for an awesome day

We were picked up just before 9 Am to start the tour on time. The driver cum guide, Paulo, was a very patient and knowledgeable besides being a good and safe driver. There were seven people in the group, all of similar ages. Evora was a lovely little town which happens to be on Unesco's world heritage list. The trip around the town could have been a little more organised with fixed timings for each monument. The lunch was at the local restaurant which my husband loved but me being a vegetarian had nothing to choose from besides the soup. The wine tasting was absolutely delightful and the quality of wine was very good too. By the time we reached the castle, it was pretty dark and drizzling but our guide didn't give up and he showed us every single thing. The ride back was smooth and we were reached to our respective hotels safely and on time. I would definitely recommend this day trip from Lisbon.
