The scenic city of Sintra is one of the most common day trips from Lisbon, and for good reason. This picturesque city is well known for the gorgeous castles and palaces that dot the area, as well as its many parks and gardens. Must-see attractions include the striking Pena National Palace, the medieval Castle of the Moors, and of course the Sintra National Palace.
The 30 kilometers (18 miles) between Lisbon and Sintra are quick and easy to traverse. Driving takes an average of just 30 minutes, though traffic can increase this up to two hours at times. The two train routes from Lisbon take an average of 40-50 minutes.
Live like royalty on a day trip to the gorgeous seaside retreat of Cascais. Once the summer residence of King Luis I of Portugal, other 19th-century European royals joined in, contributing to its luxurious reputation. The city is hugely popular for its stunning scenery, sandy beaches, and many other attractions. Travelers can check out the Praia da Ribeira, the Cascais Citadel Palace, and the vista point of Boca de Inferno.
Cascais is located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) west of Lisbon. The trip takes around 40 minutes by car or by train. Buses usually take about an hour longer.
Exploring the medieval walled town of Obidos is a great way to spend a day away from Lisbon. Stroll the picturesque cobblestone streets of the hilltop city to find some impressive photo ops. The old city walls, Obidos Castle, and the Church of Santa Maria are all favored spots to see. During summer, the town travels back in time with its annual Medieval Festival.
You can travel the 84 kilometers (52 miles) to Obidos from Lisbon in a little over an hour by car or express bus. The train is the slowest option transportation option, making your trip about two and a half hours.
Travel back in time on a day trip from Lisbon to the ancient city of Évora. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Évora’s history dates back over 5,000 years. Because of its storied past, museums and monuments are all over the city. History buffs will love learning about places like the Roman Temple with its graceful columns, the Gothic Cathedral of Évora, the ossuary of Igreja de São Francisco, and so many more.
It will take around 90 minutes to travel the 135 kilometers east to Évora by car. By train or bus it should take close to two hours.
Get to know the second-largest city in Portugal on a trip to Porto. Though the city is probably best-known for its sweet Port wine, there is plenty more to this city on the Douro River. With an abundance of fascinating sights across the city, travelers can climb the 225 steps of the Clérigos tower for sweeping views of the city, tour the commanding Porto Cathedral, or admire the golden interiors of the Church of São Francisco. Harry Potter fans should absolutely visit the unbelievable Lello Bookstore to climb the striking red steps said to have inspired the staircases of Hogwarts.
Plan ahead for the journey of 312 kilometers (194 miles) to Porto, as it will take around three hours to get there on the road or by train.
If you’re trying to decide the best way to get to your day trip, Lisbon and the surrounding areas have several transportation options.
There is a good and reliable rail network all over Portugal, making train travel a viable option for most day trips. In Lisbon, the primary stations for out of town trips are Santa Apolonia, Oriente, and Cais do Sodré.
As Portugal is such a small country, day trips by bus are usually a smart option. The bus tends to cost less than the train and frequently doesn’t take much more time.
Renting a car is always an excellent way to day trip, especially to take in the beauty of Portugal. A private vehicle allows you to go where you want when you want without skipping anything on your list. Though a car gives you the freedom to roam wherever you please, keep in mind that traffic and parking can be significant issues in popular destinations.
Taking a guided tour is almost always the most fun and convenient option for a day trip. Get to know fellow travelers and learn interesting facts and cultural information that may not be in a guide book. Additionally, many guided tours provide you with transportation and peace of mind that you will always get where you’re trying to go.
The time of year you travel and your destination are the two biggest factors in determining what to bring with you for the day. If you’re headed to the beach, swimwear, a towel, and sunscreen are imperative. During winter, the chance of rain is pretty high in Portugal, so bring a raincoat or umbrella.

I didn't have enough time to go around Lisbon, so I decided to take this tour, and it became the hallmark of my whole trip! Maria (my tour guide) was very knowledgeable with a huge amount of interesting facts about the sites we have been too and an extremely nice personality that made me feel like I am on a trip with an amazing friend instead of just a tour guide. I can definitely say she is the best tour guide I have ever met. She also gave advices on the types things I can eat/drink in the Sintra village, and I must say she definitely knows what will get you to lick your fingers! The sights selection is awesome, especially Pena Palace and Cabo Da Roca. If you are in Lisbon and you haven't seen these places yet, booking this tour is definitely the most important thing you should do.
This experience is a must do for all, especially those that love history and picturesque views and architecture! We had Andrè Feldman as our guide, who is extremely knowledgeable in all areas, but more importantly, is super fun to be around! He definitely got a thumbs up from all of us that were on the tour! And as a added bonus, got some great snaps of us that he then sent to our WhatsApp after the tour, that's definitely going the extra mile for his customers! The tour was so chilled and relaxed, that we just had so much fun with it and felt zero stress!
Our guide Tanya was helpful and personable, making this an enjoyable day. The minivan was clean, modern and in good condition. The locations were photogenic, and, with Tanya's input, interesting. We departed the schedule by having a longer lunch in Sesimbra than expected, but this was no problem. The wine tasting was enjoyable, and the wines reasonably priced to buy. A good day, recommended. All reasonable covid precautions were taken.
This was a great tour and really good to give you a glimpse of places outside of Lisbon. It was worth the early start to see Sintra before it gets too busy. Our guide, Reneta was very knowledgeable and friendly and was really easy-going. We could ask questions and chat as well as have the formal tour. It was well paced and enough time was given in each of the places visited although a little more time in Cascais may have been nice.
Maria was really the best of the best, I enjoyed this day trip and Maria was making sure that we were entertained and The Pena palace and the history of it was interesting and knowledgeable. I am glad I went to this tour as I have learned so much that day. Thank you so much Maria.
