Full description

Get entrance tickets to Jerónimos monastery, a national monument classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and located near the city of Lisbon. Learn about how King Manuel I commissioned the monastery in 1496 to honor the Infante for his devotion to Our Lady and faith in St. Jerome.

Once inside, marvel at the Manueline or Portuguese Late Gothic architecture. Discover how the monastery of St. Mary of Belém was donated to the monks of the Order of St. Jerome. For this reason, it is commonly known as the Jerónimos Monastery.

In 1833, when the order was dissolved, the monastery was used as a school and orphanage until 1940. In the 19th century, the church became the monument for local heroes and poets such as Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama.

Come and discover what is not simply a notable work of architecture, but also an important part of Portuguese identity and culture.

Even with a pre-booked ticket you have to wait in line for entry. The line was pretty long but we didn't mind waiting a bit, but then chaos almost broke out when just as we neared the front of the line they told everyone the queue was moving to the opposite side of the entry and we had to rejoin the queue there. Entry could definitely be better organised. However, once inside, the building/cloisters is beautiful and worth seeing. But make sure not to miss the church (which you don't need a ticket for and has a much quicker entry) which is equally beautiful if you don't want to wait in line.

You still have to wait on line to get into the monastery but you skip having to wait on an additional line to buy tickets by purchasing them online. You can visit the church for free- only the monastery requires a ticket. The monastery however is beautiful and worth a visit. We visited in early September on a weekday. The sign said it was a 1 hour wait but we only waited about 20 minutes.

The place is beautiful, but the line to enter the monastery was huge. I think it could be better organized to avoid that. But it’s worth the visit, and I would advice everyone to arrive early and be aware you’ll be in line outside in direct sunlight, so dress lightly.
