Full description
Meet your private guide and commence your journey at the iconic Cafe Pasteis de Belem. Indulge in and learn about the famous egg tarts, created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery. Gain insight into Belem's close association with the early explorers as you discover Vasco da Gama's last night spent here before embarking on his epic voyage to India. Next, visit the extravagant Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a monastery that was funded by the 5% tax levied on spices imported into Portugal. Originally designed as a modest monastery complex, the extensive construction took 50 years, ultimately creating one of the most intricate religious buildings in Portugal. Witness the historically significant Discoveries Monument in Belem, one of Lisbon's most iconic monuments, constructed to promote national pride while honoring the great Portuguese explorers. Stroll by the charming Torre de Belem, which once stood in the center of the Tejo Estuary, safeguarding the city against sea-bound attacks. Despite its small size, this defensive fortification boasts elaborate craftsmanship and beautifully carved stonework, making it the emblem of Lisbon today. Belém is brimming with charming cafés and restaurants, many of which offer outdoor terrace seating. Your guide can suggest great spots for you to enjoy once the tour concludes.
