Wonderful trip whilst in Lisbon Stunning Don’t forget your camera but be prepared to queue ( for a long time ) even with a ticket. Next door is the bakery that invented the fabulous Portuguese tarts and across the road from Belem tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Really beautiful and tranquil. Would recommend seeing this when in Lisbon. We did expect there to be more to see with the size of the building compared to what was open but it looked like restoration work was ongoing. There was also a lack of information to read about the actual monastery too. We still had to queue despite having a ticket but it was quite fast moving so it was only for 15/20 minutes. Overall a good experience!

The monastery is definitely worth paying to visit. However, the queue to get in (even with tickets) is incredibly long. We went on January 4th (not tourist season) and we waited an hour to get in. Happily, after looking around the monastery, the queue to the (free) church had dwindled down to about a dozen people. Very quick to get in. I also recommend heading down the street to try the Pastéis de Belém. Another (quickly moving) queue and the best tarts- in my opinion!
