Spend a week biking along the coastlines and natural beauty of Portugal, stopping to enjoy pristine beaches, fishing villages, and remote wineries along the way. See the real Portuguese countryside, away from the glitz and glamour of cosmopolitan Lisbon.
What to Expect
Cycle your way through Portugal's best coastlines and scenery on this week-long bicycling adventure. Explore the land and water from Sesimbra to the small village of Odeceixe in the southwest region, stopping to enjoy beaches, fishing villages, lagoons, and islands along the way. Your daily itinerary includes activities like visiting Arrábida Natural Park, sailing to the island of Troia, and exploring the rich ecosystem of Santo Andre Lagoon, all before settling down to rest in a hotel or inn for the evening.
This tour is accompanied by one or two local Portuguese cycling guides and a guide who takes the support car, prepares the picnics and transports your luggage. This tour requires a moderate level of fitness, since you will be cycling every day. However, easy and challenging option levels are available to fit your needs.
Day 1: Welcome and Orientation (Meals: D)
Arrive at the airport and transfer to Sesimbra, a picturesque fisherman's village 40 minutes away from Lisbon. You will have time to visit the village center, or to take a taxi to visit the beautiful Cape of Espichel. At 18:00, join us for a welcome drink and a briefing, before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: The Arrábida Natural Park (Meals: L, D)
Cycle from Sesimbra to Setúbal along a gorgeous mountain route through Arrábida Natural Park. Visit the lovely castle of Sesimbra and its amazing sea views. Climb to the top of a mountain for sweeping views, then descend toward the beach, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim.
Day 3: The Wine and Rice Fields Tour (Meals: L, D)
Cycle from Setúbal to Pinheiro da Cruz, and transfer to Santo André. Cross the water to Troia, leaving the city of Setúbal behind you. Stop for a swim at the Troia peninsular beach, then ride through rice fields where storks and egrets feed. Enjoy a wine tasting and visit to the winery.
Day 4: The Lagoons Tour (Meals: L)
Cycle from Santo André Lagoon to Santiago do Cacém. Start with a relaxing stop at the Santo André Lagoon, which is rich in bird life and separated from the ocean only by a sand dune. Visit the lovely village of Melides and its unique marble book monument, then ride through magnificent cork oakland until Santiago, stopping to see an olive mill when possible.
Day 5: From the Castle to the Beach (Meals: L, D)
Cycle from Santiago do Cacém to Porto Covo. Begin with a visit to the beautiful windmill of Santiago, which is still operating, and then see the fascinating Roman ruins of Miróbriga. Ride through a beautiful green oak forest before returning to the coastline, which offers new scenery: black schist cliffs contrasting with the yellow sand and deep blue ocean. Arrive early at the hotel in the lovely fisherman village of Porto Covo and enjoy free time to see the coast and spend time at the beach.
Day 6: The Fishing Coves Route (Meals: L)
Cycle from Porto Covo to Almograve. Start by visiting the fort of the Pessegueiro Island (no entrance), then cycle to a small fishing cove where, if you are lucky, you can see the fishermen coming back from the sea and have a look at the local fish. Ride to the lovely Vila Nova de Milfontes, and on to Almograve to finish with a ride along wild coastline. Visit another hidden fishing port, built in the middle of impressive high cliffs.
Day 7: The Cliffs Route (Meals: L, D)
Cycle from Almograve to Odeceixe. Today, you will ride along an incredibly beautiful dirt road near the wild and rocky coast, where you can see the storks that build their nests on rocky islets. After lunch, ride to the village of Odeceixe, where you can choose whether to stay and explore, or ride along a river that leads to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the southwest region of Portugal.
