New Orleans: Laura Creole Plantation Guided Tour

Experience the disappearing world of Creole Louisiana on a 75-minute guided tour of the Laura Plantation main house, gardens and slave quarters. Located on the West bank of the Mississippi in the heart of Plantation Country – the main house dates from 1805 and has been restored to the time when it functioned as both a family home and the office for the sugar plantation. Visit the raised basement and galleries, men's and women's parlors, service rooms and common rooms. Walk through the 200-year-old sugar plantation homestead, including 3 gardens: Jardin Français, the kitchen potager & BananaLand grove. Hear intimate stories about four generations of free and enslaved members of the Creole families who lived here. Gleaned from handwritten memoirs and archival documents from the United States and France, each story told in the 1805 Maison Principale, on the grounds, and in the original 1840s slave cabins is a true, personal account of the women, children and men who spent their lives on this sugar farm. Spend time touring the onsite museum exhibit on your own after your tour ends. When Laura Plantation opened to the public in 1994, it became the first historic attraction in Louisiana to include stories of enslaved Africans as part of the tour. What people are saying about Laura Plantation

Overall rating

4.4
(125 reviews)

I really loved this tour. We were only five people in the group, so plenty of room in the van. Guide René was very informative and a pleasant person to spend the day with. The whole thing was very well organized. The airboat ride was great fun, saw multiple alligators and got to feed them. Lunch at Houmas Plantation was good and plentiful. I loved the garden and the outside of the house. However, I was not the biggest fan of the tour of the inside - it focussed very much on the house itself, little about the people who lived there and next to nothing regarding the lives of the enslaved. The tour at Laura Plantation more than made up for that, though. Our historian and part-time school teacher guide really brought the people who lived on the Plantation to life for me - both the family and the enslaved workers. While this tour is on the pricier side, I felt it was worth it and would recommend it.

This tour was absolutely spectacular! Kin went above and beyond to make his tour stand out. From the water bottles he passed out before our tour, to the recommendations for restaurants he texted us, Kin really came through. We spent hours looking for a tour that had a guided tour at the Whitney plantation, and we couldn't find any; however, after arriving today, Kin told us he booked us for the guided tour since it was the better way to experience the Whitney plantation! On the way to the museum Kin gave us history of the area (New Orleans, the plantations, and everything in between). He even drove us by other plantations so we could learn about creole plantations in the area. I'd highly recommend this tour for anybody looking to learn more about plantations and the enslaved people who lived on them. If I came back, I would be sure to book other tours with K's Luxury Transportation and Tours!

Everything was as described, and even more, I did not expect that we would be visiting both Laura Plantation and Oak Alley inside with guides, it was very interesting. The guide Laura in Laura Plantation spoke with great commitment for over 80 minutes, she gave many facts and anecdotes, she has been working in this place for years so her knowledge is simply enormous. We had free time at both plantations, we were at each for over 1.5 hours, there was time for photos, to walk around everything and to rest. Transport was impeccable, everything on time and efficiently, Mrs. Justina helpful and caring.

It was all anazing. I couldn't think of anything to improve. Rene was knowledgeable and hilarious. I was up right on time and everything went smoothly. The company who does the airboat and plantation tours have an anazing staff who take it all very seriously but still have fun.

Lindie was amazing! You could feel her passion for the topics covered. Educational and entertaining. She even spoke French to a member on the tour. The gift shop was super cute as well.
