I had a most wonderful private tour with Thieng as my guide and boat captain. His English was superb and he proactively contacted me the day before arrival to agree arrangements for pick up etc. he also met me the day before the tour and came to pick me up at the hotel to guide me to the pier pick up point As it happened I was the only one who had booked the trip and was a solo (female, relatively senior!) traveller. The itinerary was great incorporating a mix of a wonderful boat ride (very clean and comfortable), visit and walk through a rural village and hike to reach a lovely waterfall. As I was the only traveller, Thieng was able to flex the trip to my preferences. Muang Ngoi is a lovely quiet village where we stopped for lunch and visit some weavers. As I had separately done a hike to a view point the previous day, I opted out of the one at Muang Ngoi. The river is beautiful with Emerald hues in morning and mountains on the way back were striking monochrome shades.

We really enjoyed the kayaking - our group started paddling a bit further up the river from other groups so it was quiet for most of our time on the water. There were small rapids but Ming (our guide) was very helpful in showing us where to go and providing help if we got stuck. The views were amazing, with a natural break to go ziplining and have lunch. The food was good, and while there were some queues it was well organised/ moved very quickly (this was mainly for both the ziplining and the tubing). We thoroughly enjoyed the day and would recommend.

The ride was comfortable in a mini van . The driver was prompt and helpful. The border crossing was easy enough. The only snag was not having enough rooms at the hotel. They tried to have me room with a stranger of the opposite gender. No thank you. After an hour of haggling, I was given my own room.

Great overview of the important sights. My guide, Sombath, was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job explaining the history, culture and religious symbolism. I’m very happy I took the tour.

Rather than a van to get us from caves to the waterfall, I'd prefer going by boat.. it's on Mekong so makes sense.. (probably a faster boat tho)
