From Reykjavík: Landmannalaugar and the Valley of Tears Tour

1. From Reykjavík: Landmannalaugar and the Valley of Tears Tour

The Essential Landmannalaugar. Embark on a journey to one of Iceland’s most captivating destinations Landmannalaugar, located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland, famous for its breathtaking landscapes such as vibrant colored rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, lava fields and epic hikes. The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains are the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity. Laugahraun lava field was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1477 consisting of vast erratic black obsidian which is known for its smooth, sharp edges and unique appearance, and famed in the TV series Game of Thrones as “Dragon Glass”. Rhyolite is a type of volcanic rock that is made of quartz and silica and with minerals such as iron and sulphur adding extra color to the mountains. Brennisteinsalda or “the Sulphur Wave” is a very good example of this. We will stay over 3 hours in Landmannalaugur and we offer approx. 2 hour guided hike through the obsidian fields up to Brennisteinsalda, but you are welcome to explore the area on your own within the given time frame. You can take on different trail or just relax and stay longer in the natural hot pool – just don’t forget to bring your swim suit and a towel on the trip! The natural beauty and unique geology of this area will leave you in awe and create memories that will last a lifetime. Itinerary Hjálparfoss - Help's fall Hjálparfoss is a beautiful, two stepped waterfall that cascades down into a large plunge pool that is surrounded by very unique basalt rock formations. The surrounding area is called Hjálp or “help” because when people had to travel from the north to the south over the highlands of Iceland they had to travel through the harsh and desolated Sprengisandur route. It was usually very hard to find a place in this desert route to feed the horses and when arriving to the the lush area near Hjálparfoss people thought of it as a help, because finally there was grass for the horses to bite after this long journey. Landmannalaugar - Hike and natural pool Welcome to Landmannalaugar in Iceland. We will stop here for couple of hours. The guide will offer you a hike up to Brennisteinsalda or the Sulfur Wave. During the hike your are surrounded by nature so peculiar that you would hardly be surprised if you saw an elf running by. The colorful rhyolite mountains and some small hot springs scattered all over close to Brennisteinsalda with a mystical steam rising up from them. When returning to the huts, after about two hours of hiking, there still is enough time to take a bath in the natural pool. Sigöldugljúfur - The Valley of Tears The magical Sigöldugljúfur canyon has become one of the main instagram spots in Iceland. It is quite an extraordinary natural wonder with its many small spring-fed streams, small ponds, crystal clear waterfalls, colorful vegetation, and fascinating cliffs. We do pick-up and drop-off from certain bus stops and hotels in Reykjavík.

From Reykjavik: Landmannalaugar Hiking Small Group Day Trip

8. From Reykjavik: Landmannalaugar Hiking Small Group Day Trip

Landmannaluagar is located in the heart of the Icelandic highlands. It is well known for its spectacular hiking trails, rhyolite mountains, and the geothermal hot spring. Landmannalaugar is a truly rare area, both geologically and aesthetically. The dramatic region can be found nestled beside the raven-black Laugahraun lava field, a sweeping expanse of dried magma that originally formed in an eruption in 1477. Háifoss Our first stop will be one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland. Háifoss or "The tall waterfall" is 122m high and located at the Fossá river. Next to Háifoss, you will find Granni (neighbor) and together they make for one of the most beautiful sights in Iceland. Sigöldugljufur "The valley of Tears" is truly one of the hidden gems you should not miss when you visit Iceland. Numerous waterfalls run down into a canyon filled with blue water. The area around it looks like the moon and vegetation is quite rare. Interestingly, Sigöldugljúfur was not always a canyon; it was once filled with the water from the Tungnaá river, before the installment of the Sigala hydroelectric station which changed the geography of the area. Bláhylur Bláhylur or Hnausapollur was formed in 871, about 1200 years ago, in a massive volcanic activity that occurred in both Bárðabunga and Torfajökuill calderas simultaneously. It is a famous eruption because it transformed a large part of the highland and happened at the same time as the beginning of the settlement of Iceland. Landmannlaugar Landmannalaugar, or the 'People's Pools', is a vast area of stunning and unique beauty in the heart of Iceland's southern Highlands. Throughout the summer, it is one of the most popular places for hiking -- either over one day or several -- and for natural hot spring bathing. Landmannalaugar itself is made up of windswept rhyolite mountains, a rock type that creates a full spectrum of dazzling colors. Shades of red, pink, green, blue, and golden yellow make for an ethereal location. We will take you on a 2-3h moderate hike to a viewpoint where you will have a spectacular view over the whole area.

The tour is super worth it! We were considering renting a 4x4 car to go there ourselves but after seeing the roads, I imagine the same trip would've taken us at least twice as long. Or guide Thomas was driving fast yet safely and comfortably - clearly the skills you pick up from years and years of experience doing such tours. Not only a great driver but a superb guide - very interesting facts about history, culture, locations, food, geography and everything else. Plus an unreal sense of humor made the tour just fly by and left us all super satisfied.

I had a great day thanks to this excursion. Our guide was great, gave us a lot of interesting information about the places visited and about Iceland in general, and he didn't hesitate to make stops on the road to show us memorable places. The hike itself was very good, and at a pleasant pace (not too slow, not too fast), which allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in this part of Landmannalaugar. Finally, the hot spring at the end of the day was very appreciable

We had a great tour with our guide. There were only three of us, so we had full flexibility. There were great and interesting conversations about nature, legends and experiences. You can tell our guide's multi-layered knowledge and her enthusiasm was contagious and rousing. Of course, the adventure is very expensive, but it's still worth it, even if everything is snow-covered.

The trip was totally worth it. The long ride was much more enjoyable with the explanations from Quique about the Icelandic landscape. We loved the hiking as well and learnt a lot about volcanic systems. 5-stars to our guide, Quique, whose drawings, knowledge and enthusiasm rounded out this trip.

Siggi was a great guide and we made the best of the weather. Great tour!
