Started off at Moon Valley where wind and rain has carved sharp spires into sandy soil. Then it was off to Chacaltaya which was a ski resort until the glacier melted. Once there you can hike up the last hundred meters up a steep slope to the very top or sit in the old lodge and watch. You are at approximately 5,400 meters/17,755 get at the lodge - the same altitude the initial base camp on Mt. Everest. A good portion of the day is sent on unpaved roads.

We really liked our guide Abel. He was always fun which made it easy for us to be also energetic the whole day. The view of the mountain and the moon valley are just incredible! On top of the mountain it was freezing and in the moon valley it’s was nice and warm; so it’s hard to decide what to wear. The ride is really bumpy..

  • Discover a off-beaten-path from La Paz on a convenient guided day trip
  • Explore lunar landscapes and bizarre geological formations at Moon Valley
  • Visit the abandoned Chacaltaya ski resort and admire otherworldly landscapes

Full description

Discover a unique area featuring lunar landscapes and bizarre geological formations located 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz lies. Valle de la Luna or Moon Valley isn’t really a valley at all, but a maze of canyons and giant spires.

Marvel at the formations, composed largely of clay and sandstone, that was created by the erosion of mountains by the area’s strong winds and rains. Enjoy the serene setting, full of wonder, and intrigue.

Head to Chacaltaya after your visit to Moon Valley. Admire this glacier that served as Bolivia's only ski resort until the complete meltdown in the last decade. Discover the former world's highest lift-served ski area and the northernmost in South America as well as the world's second most equatorial after Maoke, Indonesia.

Walk from the abandoned ski resort to the top of the Chacaltaya mountain to enjoy great views at over 5000 meters above sea level.
