Full description
Be collected at your accommodation and be driven to the beginning of the forest walk. Trek on the easy track along the crystal clear La Fortuna river. En route, hop on a tractor cart uphill to a panoramic viewpoint. Spot the next location from a distance then begin the return walk down a jungle staircase. Halfway down is a high suspension bridge to cross. The trail leads further down the huge canyon, which was shaped by a volcanic mega-eruption. At the end of the canyon is the spectacular La Fortuna waterfall. Be amazed by the lush vegetation on its 70-meter high walls, the huge volcanic rocks at its foot, and the amount of water splashing down in its massive pool. Take time to bask in its beauty and if you are brave, you can take a super refreshing dip. Return to the viewpoint then walk down to the little village of the Maluku Indians. Seated in their Palenke (main house), enjoy a rest while listening to an interesting story about their culture, art, and history. After being active for a few hours, the time has come to relax and enjoy a typical hot lunch. Next to the restaurant is a butterfly garden and frog pond that you can explore until your food is served. Reenergized, take a 15-minute ride to the park at the foot of the Arenal volcano. Being the trek through the primary forest where you can see huge trees with giant roots. Besides a variety of birds, the forest is host to monkeys, sloths, and coati. Once you are out of the forest, cross farmland to a green lake. Passing a cemetery for the victims of the eruption, reach the wall of lava from the 1968 disaster. Climb some steep steps to arrive on top of a huge mass of lava rocks. Follow a trail, which has been cut through the rocks you climbed on your way up the slopes of the Arenal. Reach the highest viewpoint that exists around the volcano and absorb the most spectacular panoramic views of Lake Arenal, the jungle, the valley, the lava fields, and most of all the Arenal that towers over you. To finish the tour in the most relaxing way, you will be taken to the natural hot spring resort. You can relax in its soothing warm water for about an hour and enjoy a volcanic mud facial and a complementary cocktail. At around 6:30 PM, you will be taken back to your accommodation.

A fantastic and very full day. The hike to the volcano was a great workout and we saw many examples of animals along the way, snakes, armadillo, birds, and frogs. Our guide Santiago was so well versed and educated about the eco system. You could tell he loved his country and was proud of the beauty within it. The walk down to the waterfall was about 500 steps but so worth it. It was gorgeous, and cool, and again a marvel of nature. How beautiful and refreshing was it to swim in that water? The hike back up was a little tough but somehow easier than going down for me (I’m in my early sixties and have a bum knee). We had a great treat of fresh pineapple and then met some people from one of the native tribes as they told us about their lifestyle, history, and their craft. Then onto the hot relaxing and refreshing and enjoyable with an adult beverage! The very full da of about 11 hours was well worth the money and Santiago was fantastic-accommodating and knowledgeable.

Really enjoyed our tour! Antonio was an amazing tour guide, really gave us a good look into the culture, wildlife, history, and future of Costa Rica! Despite getting rained on he made the tour really fun, had a great sense of humor, and was an awesome photographer :) thanks Tony!

Christian and Eric were AMAZING tour guides. So fun but with an insane amount of knowledge and ability to spot animals and creatures. Eric specifically almost cried from passion while talking about the destruction of indigenous cultures in Costa Rica with colonialism and how the Maleku are some of the last people left on earth with such a strong connection to nature. It was SO moving and beautiful it’s so obvious these your guides are extremely passionate about wildlife and nature and it’s really inspirational.
