Melodie was the most wonderful guide so far. Very knowledgeable and great to chat with. The tour was great as well, though you need a certain constitution to get up to the monkey mountain. 20 minutes up is quite an ascent, so bring some water and comfy shoes. The other part is mostly flat and easy to walk.
Our guide Toru, gave an excellent tour of Arashiyama, giving lots of information and anecdotes. The bamboo forest was very busy, but the gardens were quiet and restful. The hike up to the monkeys was a bit more taxing than we expected, but we got there in the end! It was worth the effort as the monkeys are grooming and playing which is interesting to see. The tour is good- just accept that it will be busy with other tourists.
