You can board the bus at any of the stops along the route. The first stop is at Kyoto Station (take the north central exit of Kyoto Station, and you will find the sightseeing bus stop directly in front of the Isetan department store).

Know before you go

  • Only soft drinks with lids (plastic bottles, coffee) can be brought on board

  • Buses may not operate in the case of severe weather, such as typhoons or thunderstorms

The buses aren’t bad - they are clean and comfortable, but there just aren’t many to support the actual demand from the tourism. They also have single story buses and that limits the capacity. We waited for a bus outside the Golden Pavilion and couldn’t get on because of how many people were in line. If we had waited for the next bus, it would have taken 50 minutes without even knowing if we’d fit depending on how many people were already on there. We ended up grabbing an Uber instead from there to our next stop. It’s a good concept, but because of the demand and the schedule, I wouldn’t recommend it. You’re bound to not really get your money’s worth like you would with other hop on hop off bus systems in other countries. Kyoto has seen a massive influx of tourists, so hopefully they can adjust this in the future to have buses running on a 15-20 minute schedule instead of the current one.

I thought that all in all it was a good value as kyoto is a spread out place and the tour took us almost everywhere and the staff was very accommodating
