What to Expect
On this 4-hour guided tour you’ll visit 2 important monuments in Kyoto, including a castle and temple that are both World Heritage sites.

Nijyo jyo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marks the time of the last shogun returning the governing power to the emperor. It is a flatland castle comprising 2 concentric rings of fortifications, the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace, and several gardens, including groves of cherry and Japanese plum trees.

Kinkaku-ji Temple, also a World Heritage Site, is one of the most visited monuments in Japan. It is a Zen temple located in northern Kyoto, with its 2 top floors completely covered in gold leaf.

Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408.

Kinkakuji overlooks a large pond, and is the only building remaining from Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times, including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto. It was destroyed again in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was built in 1955.
