Top Tours & Activities in Kyoto
A place of both historical value and modern living, Kyoto is a cultural melting pot for everything from ancient shrines to high-tech gadgets. Hailed as both the past and the future of Japan, Kyoto has something to offer every wanderer.
Among the most popular tourist attractions are the remnants of Kyoto's ancient architecture – places like Nijo Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the original home of the Emperor. Carefully maintained and open to any respectful tourist, these sites are considered cultural treasures and are downright sacred to some.
The Golden Pavilion (also known as Kinkakuji Temple) is another must-see, a three tier golden building that's been painstakingly preserved to showcase its historical significance.
Sightseeing is another great activity, especially guided tours. A good day tour will take you to all the significant attractions, such as the Heian Jingu Shrine, as well as lesser-known hot spots, like the Kyoto Handicraft Center. Definitely stop at the Sanjusangendo Temple – it's one of Japan's longest wooden structures and has on display more than 1000 life-sized statues!
If you're considering a trip to Kyoto, it's worth arranging a schedule to make sure you hit all your desired stops. Hire a tour guide to make the most of it. There's simply so much to see and do, and you won't want to miss anything!
What People Are Saying About Kyoto
Guide provided excellent information at each of the sites and shared insights in how the past has shaped modern day Japanese culture.
Very enjoyable and informative tour. A great intoduction to Kyoto and Risa, our guide gave us many insights and historial facts about the beautiful Shrine and Zen Buddhist Temple complex we visited. Final part of the tour finished in the Gion district which exceeded our expectations with it's charming lantern lined streets and lovely River setting. Again Risa gave us lots of valuable information in regards to the Maiko and this Restaurant district. Small group made this tour really worthwhile and would definitely recommend it if you have 3 hours to spare!!
Interesting off the main attraction path. You learnt & see things you wouldn't on your own. We particularly enjoyed the visits to various craftsmen. Mia is the best tour guide I ever had. She is full of energy, funny yet professional and well informed, Highly recommended.
Paul was a perfect guide he was kind informative kept the right pace. He is very thoughtful and had some interesting stories to tell and share.
The tea ceremony was one of the highlights of our trip. Very interesting and well explained and we even got to make the tea ourselves. The guide was great and spoke perfect English and often stopped to ask if we had any questions. She was very patient when we got it wrong and corrected us in a polite and understanding way. Highly recommended.
