Explore some of the most impressive archaeological ruins of Turkey on a 3-day tour of Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma. See the stunning petrified waterfalls of Pamukkale and the city of Hierapolis built to take advantage of the thermal waters.
What to Expect
Enjoy a comprehensive sightseeing tour of some of the most impressive ruins of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine Empires on a 3-day trip that takes in the archaeological complexes of Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma. The tour also includes a trip to the surreal landscape of Pamukkale, where you can bathe in the healing waters and see the “Cotton Castle” terraced waterfalls.
Day 1: Izmir - Ephesus - Kusadasi (L, D)
A guide will pick you up from Izmir Airport for the transfer to the ancient city of Ephesus. Before you enter the archaeological complex, go to the small 14th-century Isa Bey Mosque by the Temple of Artemis. Next, enjoy a comprehensive tour of the ruins of Ephesus, walking down historic streets to the Great Theater, stunning façade of the Celsus Library, and much more.
After a buffet lunch, learn how Turkish carpets are made by hand at a local producer’s, and then proceed to the House of the Virgin Mary, where she spent the last years of her life. See the remaining column of the Temple Of Artemis (Diana), one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. In the evening, you will enjoy a fashion show at a leather outlet center, before your overnight stay in Kusadasi.
Day 2: Kusadasi - Pamukkale (B, L, D)
Depart after breakfast for the stunning terrace formations of Pamukkale. Explore the unique geographical phenomenon where white calcium deposits from the area’s hot springs have created a surreal, petrified waterfall. After lunch, you will go to the remains of the old city of Hierapolis, built as an ancient spa to take advantage of the thermal waters, and featuring the largest necropolis in Asia Minor. Drive back to Kusadasi for your overnight stay.
Day 3: Priene - Miletus - Didyma (B, L)
Today you will explore the ancient city of Priene, the first grid-system planned city of the Ancient World. Located on a hill at the base of Mycale, the highlights of the Ionian League city include the columns of the Temple of Athena, the small theater of the Bouleterium, the central Agora, and the Altar of Zeus and Cybele.
Next, go to Miletus, home of Thales and a principle Ionian city near the mouth of the Maeander River. Before the Persian invasion in the middle of the 6th century BC, Miletus was the wealthiest of all Greek cities. Admire the Delphinium, Nymphanion, and superb semi-circular Theater, as well as the Faustina Baths.
After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Didyma to see the massive columns of the Temple of Apollo. After Delphi, Didyma was considered the most important oracle of the Hellenic World. Recent excavations have uncovered a major sanctuary dedicated to Artemis. Return to Kusadasi, and transfer on to Izmir Airport.
