What to Expect
Discover the former capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia at the ruins of Sardis in Turkey’s fertile Gediz River plain as it flows into the Aegean Sea.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Kusadasi or at Kusadasi Harbor, or from hotels in Izmir or Izmir Airport, and depart for Sardis, where one of the churches of St. John can be found.
Tour the ruins of the temple dedicated to the Anatolian mother goddess Cybele, and the remains of the Temple of Artemis, also known as the Temple of Diana. Discover where a 4th-Century Basilica was later added.
You will also see the golden river of Pactalos, which flowed through the market-place and carried golden sands that turned out to be gold dust from Mt. Tmolus. See ruins of Byzantine shops, and the Royal Road.
You will visit the Gymnasium of Sardis, and the reconstructed Sardis Synagogue, thought to be one of the most impressive synagogues in the western diaspora yet discovered from antiquity.
The tour also includes a visit to a carpet weaving center near Pergamum to discover the art of rug weaving, before your return to Kusadasi or Izmir.
