Full description
Take a half-day pilgrimage to the Batu Caves, a remarkable 113-year-old temple complex 13 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. Following a pick-up from your city center hotel, transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to the limestone hills where the caves and shrines are located. Discovered by the American naturalist William Hornaday in 1878, the area was already known to Chinese settlers and indigenous people (as well as the resident monkeys). Opt to climb the 272 footsteps to the cave entrance for a remarkable view of Kuala Lumpur sprawling down below. See the world’s 2nd tallest statue of a Hindu deity. Visit during the annual Thaipusam celebrations, and you will joining the millions of people from around the world who gather there to witness the colorful celebrations. Whatever time of year you visit, you will also get the chance to see some traditional batik painting, and visit the famous Royal Selangor Pewter factory.

We enjoyed our trip. Smooth pick-up and drop-off (driver agreed to drop us off at a slightly different place, which was good for us). Plenty of time at the caves. Driver was friendly local and shared her knowledge of local life, this was very interesting. If you'd like to save time, you could probably skip the factory visits, those were not as fascinating (and ended with an option to purchase goods).

We were picked up promptly and taken to the caves. Our driver and guide Mr. Mahen was very polite and welcoming. He told us about the places we were passing, about the people and culture of Malaysia. We made our way to the caves and temple and he told us about the gods, the carvings, the colours, the beliefs and so much more! We had plenty of time here before heading on to the Batik Factory. Again the people were welcoming and there was no pressure to buy... although we did! The final stop was the Pewter factory and an excellent guide named Vanessa told us all about the history of the company and gave us lots of insight into how the items were made. On the way back our driver kindly let us off in town so we could grab some shopping and lunch. Great way to spend a morning or an afternoon as it is interesting and informative but doesn't take the whole day. Highly recommended.

Ganesh our tour guide was brilliant. He was so knowledgable about not only the Batu Caves tour we had enlisted for, but local knowledge of KL, the pewter factory tour & the chocolate factory. He was patient and answered all our questions - including tips on how to avoid the monkeys on the way up to the Batu Caves! Thank you Ganesh, the experience wouldn’t have been the same without you!
