This adventure begins with a trip to Materuni Waterfall followed by a bean-to-cup coffee tour and a stop at the Chemka Hot Spring. It gives travellers the opportunity to experience both the natural beauty of Tanzania as well as some local traditions and culture. Your guide will drive you to Materuni -the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park- where the waterfall is located. At a height of 85m it is the tallest waterfall in the country’s northern region. From the village you will hike for about 40 minutes down to the waterfall where you can enjoy the cool water from Kilimanjaro mountain. On leaving the waterfall you will be taken to a nearby community to learn about Arabica coffee. You will then have guided instructions on how to prepare coffee manually, from scratch, using local utensils and techniques. After enjoying some freshly brewed organic coffee you will relax to a lunch of typical Tanzanian dishes. We then set off for our final stop, Chemka Hot spring. Here you can enjoy a relaxing swim in the natural pools before returning to Arusha for drop off at your specified locations.

Start early at 06:30 am in the morning from your hotel with a drive to the western side of the mountain in which you will drive through the rich agriculture area at the base of the mountain, then to plantation forest up to Londorosi gate at 2250m asl. After all registrations and park formalities, move steadily up through indigenous montane rain forest, home to a variety of animals and birdlife. Spot different types of wildlife like colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, velvet monkeys, different types of birds like crested turacos, hornbill, and alpine chat. See animal footprints and droppings of elephants, elands, buffalo, and lions as these western regions are frequently visited by a big game from Kenya’s Amboseli National Park which neighbors Kilimanjaro National Park and the less visited side of the mountain. End the drive at Morum barrier at 3400m asl where you will begin a 7-hour hike. From this point at the edge of the plateau, hike in any direction as you follow the myriad of small animal tracks and meander your way across the plateau 8.5km to Shira Cathedral point 3870m/12703 ft asl. Get a stunning view of Mt. Kilimanjaro peak and see the remains of a volcanic crater that expired around half a million years ago and is one of the world heritage sites. In the late afternoon or evening, walk back to Morum Barrier gate, where the vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to the hotel

Materuni Village is located 15 km north of Moshi, it is the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park, about 95 km from Africa Safari Arusha. Before you reach the village, you will drive slowly past the banana farms and local rural villages. The people are very warm and welcoming, inviting you to their local Materuni home. An English-speaking guide will take you for a walk around the village. After a short briefing, he will guide you on a 40-minute hike to the waterfalls. This magical green environment with tropical trees will lead to the impressive 80 meters high waterfall. Here you can take some time to relax and swim, so please bring your swimsuit. Enjoy your prepackaged lunch prepared by our chefs from Africa Safari Arusha. After the hike to the Materuni Waterfall, you will visit a traditional coffee farm where they will teach you everything you need to know about the process of making coffee. Day 1: Hotel – Machame Gate – Machame Campsite. We drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate which is located on the southern side of the mountain. This drive takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. Starting at the Machame Gate (5,718 ft or 1,748m) we will be climbing to Machame Camp (9,350 ft or 2,850m). This trek takes approximately 5-7 hours and is through the Tropical Rainforest Zone. Overnight at Machame Camp. Day 2: Machame Hut Campsite to Shira Campsite Starting our day off in the Rainforest Zone at Machame Camp (9,350 ft or 2,850m), we will be leaving the Rainforest Zone to head to our next campsite, Shira 2 Camp (12,621 ft or 3,847m). We are now entering the next ecological zone, the Moorland/Heather Zone. Trees are scarcer and small plants become more common. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp. Day 3: Shira Campsite to Barranco Campsite Starting at Shira 2 Camp (12,621 ft or 3,847m), we start trekking to our next camp – Barranco Camp (13,066 ft or 3,983 m). We hike towards the Lava Tower for lunch. After having lunch, we begin to make our descent to Barranco Camp. The landscape becomes more and more desolate as desert starts to take over. The views of the Great Breach Wall are fantastic from this camp, probably better than anywhere else on the mountain. We camp at Barranco Camp (13,066 ft or 3,983 m). Day 4: Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite We climb from Barranco Camp (13,066ft or 3,983 m) to Karanga Camp (13,106ft or 3,994 m). To get to Karanga Camp, we must cross over the Barranco Wall. This climb is not technical and you will have the guides to assist you. This trek takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete. Afterwards we will rest for the remainder of the day. We camp overnight at Karanga Camp. Day 5: Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite We climb from Karanga Camp (13,106ft or 3,994 m) to Barafu Camp (15,239ft or 4,644 m). This trek takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete. Afterwards we will rest for the remainder of the day. We camp overnight at Barafu Camp. We will be going to sleep at about 7 pm, in order to wake up at 11 pm for our summit climb. Day 6: Barafu Hut Campsite / Uhuru Peak / Mweka Campsite Elevation: 4620m to 5895m to 3100m Starting at Barafu Camp (15,239ft or 4,644 m) we will begin our summit trek to Uhuru Peak (19,341ft or 5,895m). We will wake up at 11:00 PM the night before to get prepared and start trekking around midnight. This trek takes approximately 7 hours to complete. We descend via Stella Point, all the way down to Mweka Camp (10,204ft or 3,110 m) in the Moorland/Heather Zone. This descent portion takes approximately 6-8 hours. Day 7: Mweka Campsite to Mweka Gate. After breakfast, we continue to climb down to Mweka Gate (5,423ft or 1,653m) where we sign the Official Kilimanjaro National Park Register, have a cold drink, and get presented our official Kilimanjaro Certificate by our Head Guide. This last descent to the gate should take approximately 3-4 hrs.

Beautiful hike through natural banana and coffee plantations to a waterfall worth seeing. During the hike, the guide explained the plants and animals along the way in detail. For example, we were able to observe a chameleon. Lunch and coffee were delicious and the manual coffee making very interesting.
