Kaunas

After meeting and greetings in the hotel, driving to the Lithuania about 130 km to visit Hill of Crosses. After crossing Latvia -Lithuania border, possibility for coffee break. More 30 km and destination reached. The Hill of Crosses is a potent symbol of faith, hope, and freedom of Lithuania. Desecrated but never destroyed, set on fire but never burned down. Located near town Siauliai it is a hill (castle mound) covered with thousands of crosses made from different materials and in different size. During the Soviet era, these crosses were removed by the authorities, but locals continuously replaced them. In 1993, Pope John Paul II had a service here. He later sent a crucifix to Lithuania which was placed on the hill, and today pilgrims begin and end their journeys at this location. For locals and visitors alike, this is a place of hope and enlightenment, reflecting Lithuania’s historical and cultural traditions. On the Hill of the Crosses, everyone can place their own cross for every occasion in life. The main thing is to believe! About 30-40 minutes for photos and walking around. Specially beautiful and emotional in the time of sunrise and sunset.

During this private day tour you will be able to explore the most interesting sites in the surrounding areas of Vilnius. The tour will start from Paneriai memorial park, where thousands of Jews from Wilna were killed.  The Paneriai or Ponary massacre was the mass murder of up to 100,000 people by German SD, SS and Lithuanian Nazi collaborators, during World War II. The murders took place between July 1941 and August 1944 near the railway station of Ponary, now known as Paneriai, a suburb of what is today Vilnius, Lithuania. After the tour in the park, you will head to the second capital of Lithuania, where today you can see the most beautiful castle, on the island in the lake. Here, you have the possibility to enjoy lunch in traditional Karaim restaurant or take boat trip around the lake. After, the group will head to the temporal capital of Lithuania - Kaunas, which is second largest town in Lithuania today. You will also visit Pazaislis monastery. After this, you will head back to your accomodation in Vilnius.

Here you can explore dwelling houses and economic buildings, from different regions in Lithuania.  After lunch, the tour continues to Kaunas, the second largest town in Lithuania, and the temporal capital of the country between the first and second world wars. The oldest part of Kaunas city is the Old Town, located to the east where the Nemunas and Neris rivers join. During the tour, you will visit most of the sites in the Old Town, including Kaunas Castle, St. George Church, Town Hall Square, the Jewish Quarter, and the Cathedral.  The tour will finish at Pazaislis Monastery -a unique baroque monument, considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of mature baroque in Northern and Eastern Europe, and distinguished by the quality of its art.

The Old Town of Kaunas was built mostly between the 14th and 16th centuries, and as a result there are many impressive architectural monuments, including gothic and baroque churches. The town center is also home to more modern and unique buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. On the tour through the Old Town you will see the ruins of Kaunas Castle, the city’s oldest building which today hosts an art gallery. Then, visit the Kaunas Cathedral, the largest gothic church in Lithuania. From there, we will head to the historic Town Hall of Kaunas, affectionately known by locals as “the White Swan”, followed by much more of the city’s main highlights and history. Enjoy a two-hour walk in a beautiful setting, all with a local guide to explain the great stories of Kaunas and answer any of your questions.

The oldest Jewish cemetery in Vilijampolė, which had been destroyed by the Soviet authorities after World War II. Aleksotas Jewish Cemetery, which is the only active Jewish cemetery around Kaunas today. Kaunas ghetto created by Nazi Germany in Kaunas, where Jews were kept in Vilijampole. The Ninth Fort museum, which contains collections of historical artifacts related both to Soviet atrocities and the Nazi genocide. Admission ticket must be payed by the guest.

THE CASE The game takes place in a fictional small town called Glenndale. A man named Carl Brown has been found murdered in his own home. Why did someone want to kill Carl? Who had the motive and opportunity? Your task is to find out who the guilty one is and which murder weapon was used. This is our first case and more will come. We estimate that it takes at least 2h to complete the assignment. It usually takes a longer time as you may want to watch the testimonials an extra time, stop for a cup of coffee, or go into a place so that the whole team keeps up. It is not the fastest team that wins, but the team with the most points! Is this suitable for children? Absolutely, the activity is fun to do together as a family but is not designed for children to manage on their own. We recommend an age from 12 years old and up if there is no accompanying adult. But remember that it’s all about a murder and all about it. You will have a fun day together!

After Trakai, the group will head to one of the largest ethnographic open-air museums in Europe that stretches across an area of 195ha. The museum was established on the picturesque shores of Kaunas Lagoon in Rumšiškės in 1966. The exhibitions at the museum are intended to introduce the ethnographic regions of Lithuania, i.e. Dzūkija (Dainava), Aukštaitija (Highlands), Suvalkija (Sudovia), Žemaitija (Samogitia) and Lithuania Minor, as they looked at the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century. After this visit the tour will head back to your accomodation in Vilnius.
