Famagusta: Fikardou, Machairas & Lefkara Guided Tour

1. Famagusta: Fikardou, Machairas & Lefkara Guided Tour

You'll leave no stone unturned as you explore Cyprus's hidden corners. This exclusive excursion takes in remote highland villages, dramatic landscapes and a revered monastery. It also includes a traditional Cypriot lunch. Stavroula, one of our local guides on this tour, says, ‘Fikardou village is an excellent example of rural mountain life, where the 19th-century architecture is in complete harmony with the environment.' A real taste of what's to come. Heading inland, you'll arrive mid-morning at rustic and laidback Fikardou. All cobblestones and historic houses, time seems to have frozen still here. And with free time to explore, you'll find that ancient traditions still hold their way. It's so well-preserved that it's on UNESCO's tentative list of world heritage sites. Next, you'll head to the 12th-century Macharias Monastery, which is located on a remote hillside. Its lavishly decorated interior houses a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary. We'll then go to charming Lefkara, a village famed for its handmade lace and embroidery. ‘Women, young and old, can be seen seated outside their homes and shops making lace,' says Stavroula. ‘For hundreds of years, the men from the village have travelled all over Europe to sell it, even Leonardo da Vinci bought some.' The tour ends on a high in Skarinou village. Here, you'll try your hand at halloumi and bread-making before enjoying a ‘KM0' lunch of locally sourced ingredients at a family-run restaurant.

Lefkara: Highlights Tour with Wine Tasting

2. Lefkara: Highlights Tour with Wine Tasting

Lefkara Lefkara can safely be called one of the most picturesque places in Cyprus and is a member of the European Charter – Villages of Europe The place gained wealth through lace embroidery. This developed in the 15th/16th Century, when the place was popular as a summer resort under Venetian rule and the local women were introduced to the art of embroidery by Venetian nobles. In any case, it is reported that Leonardo da Vinci personally bought an embroidered cloth in Lefkara and donated it to the cathedral in Milan. In the 19th/20th The export of embroideries began, young men with more or less knowledge of the language traveled with suitcases filled with embroideries from their village to the cities of the Ottoman Empire, Alexandria, Smyrna and Constantinople and also reached Western Europe. Thanks to the wealth that developed, the villagers were able to build representative houses and invest in their children's education. The art of embroidery reached its peak around 1920/30, when the manual work of Lefkaritiko embroidery could not yet be copied by industrial embroidery from the Far East. In 1986 another Lefkara embroidery was donated to the Milan Cathedral for its 600th anniversary. This embroidery craft was included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The Lefkara embroidery is a white embroidery with white cotton thread on a cotton or linen ground; geometric repetitive zigzag patterns are often worked out with hole rosettes. The museum shows how the women of Lefkara embroidered their work together in the streets. The embroideries are offered in many shops in the village. Since the 17th century the silversmith's trade has also established itself in Lefkara. In many shops you may have a look at this silver work and of course you can also buy it.
