What to Expect
Have you ever dreamed of being a master potter? Well, today in the small town of Thimi, just east of Kathmandu, you can have your chance to learn this centuries-old tradition. Learn techniques from local artistans before setting down and throwing your own souvenir pot!

The day begins at 10:00 with a history of pottery and terracotta in Nepal. The natural clay resources make for an exquisite base to work with, and the people of this region have long used the land to make these works of art. You will learn about the Thimi and Bhaktapur, Deokhuri and Janakpur areas, each with their own specific styles and methods. Your instructor helps you understand the meaning and purpose behind these crafts — both as works of art and currency. Until the mid 1960s, these pots were used to purchase rice and other goods, but the barter system has been replaced by commerce.

After the history lesson it's time to try your hand at throwing a pot, and your guide will help you make something truly beautiful. When you're happy with your product, we'll put it in the kiln to set while we head off for lunch.

Lunch is served along with a tour of the Gamcha Organic Farm. Here, approximately 9 miles (15km) outside of Kathmandu, you will discover a jungle-like farm. This beautifully prepared and preserved farm has cultivated for nearly 25 years and was the first place in Nepal to offer organic training. The lunch is prepared here, and you can also purchase vegetables and experimental jams, juices, pestos etc. to take home and test!
