Departing from St Charles station, we board a "panoramic" train (25 min) for the calanques of the Côte Bleue, following the viaducts perched on the cliffs since 1900. Stop at the little port of La Redonne to follow the "sentier des douaniers" (customs officers' path) for 1 hour along the cliff faces to the Calanques de Figuière, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs. Direction. 30 min to the croquignolé ports of Petit Méjean, then to the fishing village of Grand Méjean, with its huts nestling between turquoise sea and red sandstone peaks. We continue along the wild coast path 30 min to the mysterious "turquoise" and "black" sea caves, where smugglers once hid their treasures. 30 min. ( In season. Swimming. Relaxation and picnic. 2 H). We reach Cap Méjean, then wind our way along the cliffs to the Emerald Calanque, the starting point of our adventure, 45 min. In season swimming. Relaxation. We then begin the most impressive part of our journey, as the ancient path dug into the white limestone rock in the 17th century winds its way through cliffs, canyons and peaks to reach the charming fortified port village of Niolon. Fishermen's cottages nestle between the Calanque and the fortified castle that has protected the Phocaean city since the 17th century. 1h15 on, we catch the train back to Marseille. Possibility of staying longer to enjoy the villages and their little bars and restaurants. ( Last train around 8.30 pm ).
