Enjoy a half day of walking through Istanbul with an expert guide. Discover ancient history, marvel at the modern buildings, and uncover the rich layers of Istanbul's fascinating role as a crossroads between east and west.
What to Expect
Istanbul is a great city to explore by foot, and your expert guide will show you the best parts of this city in a fun and interactive day tour.
Your day begins at Taksim Square, a massive roundabout built in 1928 in honor of the patron saint of Turkey. Today, its flashy billboards look more like Times Square than anything else, and its makes a great place to depart along Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue.)
Next, you'll head into the bustling district of Beyoğlu, where you can come back later to explore the shops, theaters and embassies of this happening quarter. Your guide will point out the more Parisian aspects of the district before you head on to Galip Dede Caddesi. Here you should snap some pictures of the lovely cobblestoned streets lined with traditional musical instrument shops.
Next, we'll head back in time to a Sufi whirling ritual before seeing the Galata Tower, a 14th century stone guard post built by Genoses settlers to protect their community.
We'll hop back on the subway before arriving at the Golden Horn sea inlet. This area has been home to settlers for over 2,500 years, and you'll marvel at the variety of life and culture that still bustles around these old shipyards.
No visit to Istanbul is complete without a look at the impact of the ottoman Empire, and today you'll head to Karkoy Square, where you can discover the multitudes of ancient and modern banks built side by side. From here, you'll cross the bridge into Yeni Camii, and then head to the Egyptian Bazaar (a nicer cousin to the Grand Bazaar). Outside of the walls of the bazaar, enjoy a stop to buy some of Istanbul's best coffee, or perhaps buy a new suit to wear to a Turkish wedding.
Your guide will lead you through all of this and more on a fun day of exploring Istanbul.
