Ok, so I like the fact that the tour guide walks you to the entrance, gets you in quickly and gives you tips how to best see the Palace. However, for $17 you get a ticket to enter and they offer a free audio guide. The company did offer a free download but only had 7-8 audios for each courtyard. I felt short changed because I saw so many things to listen to but was not included with the downloads that this company offered. My advice is to pay the $17 vs the $50.

Despite going on a Saturday we had an easy time finding the ticket collection point, and our guide was friendly and informative. Once inside the palace we were left to have a look around at our own pace, which was perfect for us. The palace and harem museum do take time to get around so definitely allow a few hours for this trip. There are queues to get in to some of the exhibitions, and if you want to see the religious artefacts be aware you’ll need to be covered, although head scarves are provided for women if you don’t have one. My personal favourite exhibition was the clothing, as the garments are in stunning condition. There aren’t many toilets in the palace so you may need to queue once you find them. We didn’t use the audio guide, so I’m unable to comment on that, but most areas are well sign posted with information in English. There is also a lovely park just behind the palace that’s worth a visit to decompress from all the people!

This is great attraction with notable detractors including lack of toilets (2 in 2nd courtyard with queues at both for women especially) and refreshment facilities. Also mainly the quantity of people admitted to the more confined areas like the harem. We visited outside of peak season so it could have been worse. Well organised by the guide taking us in but once reliant on the audio guide it was difficult to negotiate the confines of rooms and corridors as well and the numbers of people moving around, posing and trying to take in the rich surroundings. The information at each point of interest was good and quite detailed and easier to use (Turkish and English). A large site with Much to see in the two hours suggested as maximum by the man supplying the voucher. So much my brain couldn’t take in anymore after 5 hours. Take a drink and snack as few opportunities inside to have anything. Like most Istanbul attractions pricey and crowded but must see if you can do it.
