One must-see is Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque, one of the most prominent landmarks in the city, especially when viewed from the First Hill or from the Asian shore of the Sea of Marmara. Gaze at its beautiful domes and semi domes, courtyards and six slender minarets.
From the Golden Age of Byzantine, the once Christian church of Hagia Sophia has been one of the most extraordinary buildings in the history of architecture. It played a very important role in the Byzantine Empire and later as a mosque in the Ottoman Empire. The word "Hagia" in Greek means "Divine" and "Sophia" means "Wisdom". "Divine Wisdom" is one of the attributes of Jesus Christ and the church is devoted to his divine wisdom.
Take in the Hippodrome and Obelisks on the square outside the Blue Mosque. The site of the former circus of the Byzantine Empire, it was used for horse and chariot racing and was excavated in the 1950s.
Stroll through the Grand Bazaar, the oldest and largest covered market place in the world. Situated in the center of the city, it is a riot of tiny stores selling jewelry, carpets and unusual souvenir. There will be optional shopping opportunities before lunch at a local restaurant.
Go to Topkapi Palace, the private residence of the Sultan and his court and the seat of the supreme executive and judiciary council, the Divan and the training school.
See Rustem Pasha Mosque, built for the famous Croatian Rustem Pasha in the 16th-Century. One of the Grand Viziers of the Ottoman Empire, he married the daughter of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, Mihrimah Sultan and the great architect Mimar Sinan built the mosque in a style very different from the simplicity of the period, with Iznik tiles decorations that contrast with the simplicity of the mosque construction.
