Overview
Explore Orthodox Constantinople, and discover the history behind its sites on a 3.5-hour tour of Istanbul. Visit the Orthodox Patriarchate in Fener, the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, the Church of St. Mary of the Mongols, and Chora Church.
What to Expect
Travel back in time to the days of Constantinople, and discover the historic Orthodox churches of Istanbul.

Following a pick-up from your hotel, drive by air-conditioned vehicle to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Fener. Visit the main building - the church of St. George - which was originally part of the Orthodox nunnery and is home to part of the pole that Christ was bound to before being flogged and crucified by Roman soldiers. See relics of 3 female saints; St. Euphemia the Great Martyr, St. Theophano (wife of Emperor Leo the Wise), and St. Mary Salome.

Next, go to the Church of St. Mary of the Mongols, the only Byzantine church that has never stopped conducting divine services and did not become a mosque. Continue to the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae to look inside one of the most revered Orthodox Christian churches. Find the Holy Virgin’s robe and her omophorion (head cover), along with part of her belt, brought from Palestine in 457, in the Vlaherna Church.

Transfer to the Kariye Museum in the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora. Famous for its rare mosaics of an unmatched variety and detail among Byzantine churches, the Church of the Holy Saviour was where the last emperor prayed as Constantinople was besieged by the Turks.

End with a transfer back to your hotel at the end of an enjoyable morning.
