Enjoy a 2-day walking tour of Istanbul's old city, led by a licensed tour guide. Discover the city's impressive architecture and learn about its colorful history.
What to Expect
Begin your 2-day walking tour at one of Istanbul's greatest architectural masterpieces — the Hagia Sophia. This 6th-century basilica boasts impressive towering minarets and beautifully handcrafted mosaics. It is considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world.
After your visit, cross the street to the Blue Mosque. One of the most famous monuments in all of Turkey, the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque) gets its name from the more than 20,000 Iznik blue tiles that adorn its facade and interior.
Continue to the Hippodrome of Constantinople and discover how life might have been in the past, as locals traveled to see the chariot races at this famous sports arena. The sport and social center dates back to Egyptian times, with relics still visible in the area.
After hearing so much history, it's time to take a shopping break. Head to the Grand Bazaar, where you'll have the chance to barter on everything from fine leather goods to spices. There are nearly 4,000 stalls here, so enjoy getting lost within the covered streets.
After lunch, continue to Topkapi Palace. This grand palace was the official and primary residence in the city of the Ottoman Sultans for approximately 400 of their 624-year reign (1465-1856). Today it serves as an incredible museum and monument to that time. Take plenty of time to stroll through its gardens and galleries filled with fine Chinese porcelain and silver. Admire many of the imperial costumes worn by the Sultans and their families, as well as monuments of the Prophet Muhammed. After a visit to the Imperial Palace, walk to the Roman Water Reservoir and see the Basilica Cistern.
The second day will start with a trip to the Great Palace Mosaic Museum. Then visit the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, the Spice Bazaar, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kalhenderhane Mosque, which was an old Byzantine Church before it was transformed to a Mosque. See the Soliman The Great Mosque and his monumental tomb.
