Istanbul: Tips for first timers
- Haggling is expected at Istanbul’s bazaars, so make sure to bargain with shopkeepers to avoid overpaying.
- The call to prayer echoes across Istanbul several times a day, starting at dawn, so be prepared for an early wake-up call. Consider earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.
- Dress modestly when visiting Istanbul’s religious sites, such as the Blue Mosque. Everyone must cover their knees and shoulders, while women should also cover their heads with a scarf.
- Always carry some cash, as some transactions may be cash only, particularly at street food vendors or the city’s bazaars.
- Istanbul’s tap water is safe to drink, but many dislike the taste and opt for filtered or bottled water instead.

I had an unforgettable experience on the Old City Istanbul tour with Ege! From start to finish, Ege brought the city’s rich history to life with fascinating stories and insights. Visiting iconic landmarks like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, Topkapı Palace, and the Basilica Cistern felt like stepping back in time. Ege’s passion and deep knowledge made every stop truly special. The details shared about each site added so much meaning, and the way Ege wove stories together kept me engaged throughout the tour. Everything was perfectly paced, allowing time to soak in the beauty and history of each location. If you want to truly appreciate the heart of Istanbul and its history, this tour with Ege is a must. Highly recommended—absolutely 5 stars!
Thanks to the professionalism of Cenck who guided us and explained very well the phases of the visit to the best monuments and cathedrals of the city. As for the agency I would give one star because it made us pay for the entrance tickets taking for granted our approval. So from €300 of the service with the entrance tickets we arrived at €600. We consider it unfair on the part of this agency and therefore I CANNOT recommend it.
It was a very nice private tour. We hit all of the major spots around the neighborhood and we had an input on how long we wanted our tour to be and what to focus on. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very friendly and made us very comfortable. I had 2 teenagers with me and they also enjoyed the tour. I definitely recommend.
We had a great Istanbul city tour. Our guide was very entertaining. They also picked us up from our hotel and dropped us off back at the hotel after the tour. This was very useful for us because we did not know Istanbul very well. The lunch was nice and delicious. I definitely recommend it.
The place is really amazing. The guide was not so friendly, I was expecting more from him, the audio tour was just good. Anyway we had a great time. You cannot miss it. Skipping the line was also a great thing.
