This 3-day tour explores the history of Christianity as it took shape and spread through Anatolia. Starting in Istanbul, you’ll take a morning flight to İzmir, where your journey into ancient history to discover the Churches of Revelation begins.
What to Expect
Early Christianity took shape and spread in Anatolia, and this 3-day journey has something of the quality of a pilgrimage – both a physical and a spiritual search for the origins and realities of one’s faith.
You’ll start out on the first morning with a flight from Istanbul to İzmir (Symrna).
You’ll be met at the airport and head out on a drive to the old Greco-Roman city of Ephesus, the site of the most important of the 7 Churches of Revelation in Asia Minor. This is where St. John brought Mary in fulfillment of his pledge to Jesus to protect her. You’ll see the last abode of the Virgin Mary at Mount Solmissos, from where she is believed to have been taken into heaven.
After lunch, your tour will continue to Laodicea (Denizli), a crossroads of the ancient world.
Have dinner at your hotel and spend the night in Pamukkale (Hierapolis).
Depart after breakfast for the ancient city of Hierapolis, home to Philip the Evangelist. Proceed to Philadelphia (Alaşehir), the youngest of the 7 Churches of Revelation, and see the standing remains of an early church and the city walls. Stop for lunch on the way.
After lunch you’ll visit the ruins of the church at Sardis (Salihli), the ancient Lydian capital that has an important place in mythology.
In the evening, you’ll arrive at Thyatira (Akhisar), one of the principal towns from which Christianity was spread throughout the region. Visit the ruins of the church before a late evening drive to Pergamum.
Have dinner at the hotel and spend the night in Pergamum.
Leave your hotel after breakfast for the drive to Pergamum (Bergama), the place that was cited as the Seat of Satan. Admire the impressive structures dating back to 339 B.C. Pergamum was a health center, where methods of treatment such as therapy with music and water, meditation, and blood transfusion were first used.
After lunch, you’ll continue to Smyrna (İzmir), where a letter was received from St. Paul praising the early believers for their faithfulness. Visit St. Polycarp Church.
After a short city tour, you’ll be transferred to the airport for an evening flight to İstanbul.
