What to Expect
Explore the curious rock formations of Cappadocia in the Central Anatolian plains on a 2-day tour from Istanbul. Enjoy round-trip transfers by plane, and spend the night in a cave hotel. Go to the former Byzantine monastic settlement of Göreme, see rock-cut churches, chapels and castles, and much more.
Day 1: Istanbul - Cappadocia
Transfer from your hotel in Istanbul to Ataturk Airport for the 70-minute flight to Kayseri Airport. Upon arrival, you will be met by a driver and guide who will transfer you to Cappadocia in about an hour. Check into your hotel and freshen up. Then, after lunch, go to the Guvercinlik Valley (“Pigeon Valley”) to discover one of Cappadocia’s most beautiful landscapes. See some of the unique rock formations known as “fairy chimneys,” and learn how they were formed from the soft tufa stone of volcanic activity. Famous for its dovecotes carved into the rocks, the valley is popular with hikers for its network of extraordinary trails.
Next, go to Kaymaklı Underground City within the citadel of Kaymaklı. Marvel at the labyrinth carved beneath the rock by the Phrygians and early Christians. Go to the thriving university town of Sinasos (Mustafapaşa), home to a large Greek population during Ottoman times. Return to your hotel at approximately 18:00 for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Cappadocia - Istanbul
After breakfast, enjoy a full-day guided tour of the Göreme Open Air Museum, Red Valley, Dervent Valley, Uchisar Rock-Castle, and Avanos. One of the undoubted highlights of Cappadocia, the Göreme Open Air Museum is a former Byzantine monastery and pilgrim site with spectacular rock-cut churches and chapels. Marvel at the rocky landscape of the Red and Dervent Valleys, before going to the extraordinary rock-cut castle of Uchisar. Situated at Cappadocia’s highest point, on the Nevsehir-Goreme road, the summit of Uchisar Castle provides some staggering views of the surrounding area.
End in the pottery village of Avanos, overlooking the Kızılırmak River (the longest river in Turkey). See Cappadocia’s highest concentration of “fairy chimneys” on the slopes of Aktepe, and hear about the Christian community that found shelter there from the 9th to 13th centuries. Then, return to Kayseri Airport for your late flight to Istanbul. You will arrive in Istanbul at around 20:30, where a private transfer will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
