About the activity provider
Whale watching company in Durban, South Africa. See whales on their migration (May to November) not interfering with the animals normal activities. The 11 passenger “BAFANA” Semi ridged Rubber Inflatable Boat offers you an exciting view. Registered with SAMSA as a suitable Whale and Dolphin Watching boat since 2012. We have seen countless cetaceans. “No doubt, the best way to view whales and dolphins up close is from a boat. The Isle of Capri Cruises offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. If fortunate, you may have a mesmerizing experience of a mother feeding or playing with her calf, or older calves jumping and teasing one another, seeking attention of the adults. Whales are enormous creatures, approximately 15m in length and weighing about 30 tons. They are very inquisitive and often perform spectacular ‘breaches’ – leaping out of the water, much to the delight of the passengers. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the Kwa-Zulu Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. However, by law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises also boasts one of the limited whale watching permits in Durban.
