Uvita: Snorkeling at Caño Island - Unforgettable Experience

Leaving early in the morning, much of the trip will be spent on the open ocean. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the beautiful coastline. This is the only place in Costa Rica where the mountains meet the ocean. You will also likely see many dolphins, whales and turtles on the way. Once we arrive at the island, we snorkel at two different locations, depending on conditions at the island. Typical, the visibility usually exceeds 80 ft. The variety of maritime wildlife that will be seen during your Isla Del Caño Snorkeling Tour is just astounding. Some species that we frequently encounter include Turtles, Manta Rays, Sting Rays, Devil Rays. Other species like Barracudas, Bottlenose Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins, Whitetip Reef Sharks, and Moray Eels are common in the island. Rarely Humpback Whales or Whale Sharks may be seen. This provides a thrill that snorkelers will never forget. This only has a chance of happening somewhere like Caño Island Biological Reserve. Encompassing 14,000+ acres of ocean, “La Reserva Biológica Isla del Caño” is exactly the kind of place that deserves not only protection but also to be experienced for its wonderful marine environment and wildlife. The Caño Island Biological Reserve is considered a world-class diving destination, and the snorkeling is no less spectacular. Set about 32 miles offshore from Uvita, the reserve is ideally situated within a huge Pacific Ocean current. The island guide fish and marine mammals from near and far to this marine paradise. Uvita: Snorkeling in Caño Island

Uvita: Snorkeling in Caño Island

The activity begins at our offices where upon arrival you must check-in with the guide(s) in charge of the group. There is a coffee, juice, cookies and water station so you can enjoy while the group gathers and then give a talk with the most important details of the activity and instructions from the guide. From the meeting point we will move in your own vehicles (if you do not have a vehicle we will take you to the entrance of the Marino Ballena Park where we take the boat) near the entrance of Playa Uvita we have a secure parking lot for your vehicles. Leaving from Playa Uvita the boat time from the starting point to Isla del Caño is around 90 minutes with the possibility of sighting dolphins and with luck humpback whales in season (January-April) upon arriving at the island we will prepare the snorkeling equipment to begin the adventure and explore the different snorkeling spots. The snorkeling time will be 2 hours divided into different points to make the most of the time and enjoy the marine life offered by the reefs of this biological reserve. The guide with his extensive naturalist experience will provide you with information and knowledge of the nature that can be observed as well as important details of the history surrounding Caño Island, which in the past was a refuge and sacred site for indigenous populations of Costa Rica and houses a great historical and cultural record and world cultural heritage. Being a protected area and a biological reserve, the measures and protocols must be followed, which is why it is important to mention that life jackets must be used at all times during the snorkeling activity (it is not negotiable) since the park rangers will be verifying at all times that the established protocols are met in order to carry out the activity. In this case, the guide will provide you with the correct information on the use of the vest for snorkeling. After the snorkeling activity, there will be a picnic lunch on a nearby beach on the coast, since food is not allowed on the island and it is uncomfortable to prepare lunch for the group on the boat, which is why for greater comfort we do it on a nearby beach. The activity ends when we return to the same point where we took the boat in Playa Uvita.
