Explore the great city of Aswan, former gate to Nubia, on a 14-hour sightseeing tour from Hurghada. See the Aswan High Dam to appreciate the technical achievements of modern Egypt. Visit the quarries of the Unfinished Obelisk, and more.
What to Expect
Enjoy a full-day tour to Aswan from Hurghada, and travel back in time from the Red Sea to one of the great cities of Ancient Egypt.
Following a pick-up from your hotel in Hurghada, transfer to Aswan via Marsa Alam. Get some great impressions of the Egyptian landscape and settlements on the 5.5-hour journey. Then, on arrival, go to the Aswan High Dam across the Nile River. Built between 1960 and 1970, it's an extraordinary feat of engineering that also created Lake Nasser.
Next, go to the ancient granite quarries of Aswan, and learn how the granite was used all across Ancient Egypt for the ambitious projects of the pharaohs, including the Pyramids of Giza. See the Unfinished Obelisk, thought to have been ordered by Queen Hatshepsut, but left incomplete after breaking.
Pause for lunch in a local restaurant, before sailing the River Nile by traditional felucca. Stop on Elephantine Island, home of a fort that stood just before the 1st cataract of the Nile, and marked the border between Egypt and Nubia.
See the remains of the ancient town of Yebu, founded around 5,000 years ago. Continue to the ruined temples of the Nile deities, Khnum and Satis. Watch the “nilometers,” where the level of the River Nile was measured for thousands of years. Take a stoll among the Nubian villages still located on the island, before the evening transfer back to your hotel in Hurghada.
