Most tourists in Egypt have been to Cairo or Luxor — but what about Abydos and Dendera? Travel to these great archeological sites and discover the history of Egypt dating back to the earliest dynasties.
What to Expect
After pick-up directly from the entrance of your hotel in Hurghada, take in the Egyptian landscape and settlements.
First stop at Abydos, one of the most ancient cities in Egypt, considered 1 of the most valuable archaeological sites. Discover the Temple of Seti I with its well-preserved, partly-colored reliefs.
See the famous Abydos King List, a list of the ancient kings reigning before Seti himself — starting with Menes, a nebulous pharaoh with rare mentions who is considered to have been the first pharaoh of a united Egypt and ending with Ramesses I, Seti’s father. Except for some pharaohs that should be banished from people’s memory, it is considered to be a complete enumeration and therefore a precious clue for the Egyptologists.
Visit the Osireion, a cenotaph built to honor the god Osiris which, according to the myth, contained his head. Not far from Seti I’s temple, you can see a temple built by his son Ramesses II, not as well preserved but with reliefs showing the battles of this pharaoh, maybe the greatest and most powerful man of the Egyptian Empire.
After this visit, have lunch before traveling to the day’s second destination, Dendera. Its impressive Ptolemaic temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, is one of the best-preserved sanctuaries in Egypt.
In the evening, travel back to your hotel in Hurghada.
