Your guide will also share information about the area and the Tlingit native population. During the tour you are likely to see a host of other wildlife including mink, marten, bald eagles, sea birds, red squirrels, otter, beaver, ducks, and Sitka black-tail deer. Be sure to bring your camera!

Hoonah: Icy Strait Village Tour and Crab Feast

Hoonah: Icy Strait Village Tour and Crab Feast

Let us tell you a little secret: It's nearly impossible to find fresh crab in Alaska! We are very fortunate to live near the crabbing grounds and own a permit to harvest crab. This allows us to offer fresh crab along with Srisa's locally famous Thai fried rice. Explore and learn about local village life from actual Alaskans in a small group van tour, then feast over the water on freshly caught dungeness crab. Start by meeting your guide at the cruise ship dock (Icy Strait Point). From there, it's a short drive to our beautifully restored Beach House, where we will stop briefly to pull the crab trap out of the water and pick out lunch! After the crab have been iced down we head to our garden in the forest. This is where we grow some of the ingredients for the fried rice and special seafood sauce. We will show you how we produce a lot of our own food and building supplies, and how barter, trade, and upcycling are important here on the island. Next stop is the carving shed to watch our master wood carving friends craft a traditional totem pole from an Alaskan yellow cedar log. The tour concludes back at the Beach House, where we cook up the fresh crab and have a crab and Thai food feast. Don't forget to try the wild Alaskan berry dessert.

Hoonah: Icy Straight Whale Watching Tour

Hoonah: Icy Straight Whale Watching Tour

Your tour will begin as you meet at the cruise pier, where your guide will take you by air-conditioned minivan to your charter boat. The drive offers some amazing views as you pass along Shaman Point where you can observe the local wildlife, including Alaskan Brown Bears, bald eagles, blacktail deer, and more. From here you will cruise around watching orcas, sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, seals and the feeding humpbacks in their natural habitat. Humpback whales come to Hoonah in great numbers to feed on the nutrient rich waters of Glacier Bay and Icy Strait every summer, beginning in May before migrating south again in September for the winter. You can marvel at the sight of humpback whales, large baleen whales that can reach over 50 feet in length and weigh as much as 30-50 tons. Amazingly, active typical whale sightings will include diving, blows, and flukes (tails). Lucky whale-watchers may get to see breaching and bubble-net feeding, a cooperative feeding method where a pod forms a circle and dives under the water; they then blow air to create a wall of bubbles that force krill and plankton to the surface where the whales can eat them. Observing humpbacks practice bubble-net feeding is a real treat and a truly thrilling experience. Designed for speed, your boat provides comfort and luxury, perfect for spotting the wildlife along Alaska's waterways. You will stay warm and dry with viewing decks and heated cabins whilst experiencing the wonder and beauty of your whale-watching trip. You will later return to the docks from where you will be transported back to Icy Strait Point with plenty of time to explore downtown Hoonah.

This was a great tour! Captain Josh and his team did an awesome tour! They are very knowledgeable, we're patient and helpful with the many questions being asked, and provided wonderful insight. They have equipment so you can see the wildlife from above with drones and have a tool to hear the whales in the ocean (how cool is that?!). Overall, we loved this tour and are extremely happy to have videos from our tour to take with us that will last a lifetime. Thank you!
