Take a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the only set that remains intact from the movie trilogies. Wander the rambling paths of The Shire and see the Hobbit Holes in the rolling hillsides. Follow your guide around the set as they show you the most famous locations and explain how the movie magic was made. Walk around the 12-acre set, past Hobbit Hole and the Mill. Then, step into the world-famous Green Dragon Inn. Sample an exclusive, specially brewed beverage to conclude your own Middle-earth adventure.

Hobbiton Movie Set is located a little southeast of Hamilton in a small town called Matamata. Free parking is available on site. If you are driving from Matamata, it’s about a 20-minute drive to the Shire’s Rest Cafe on Buckland Road. Journey times (in brackets) are approximate: Auckland (2 hours), Taupo (1.5 hours), Rotorua (45 minutes), Hamilton (45 minutes), Waitomo (1.5 hours), Tauranga (45 minutes). As part of your guided tour, a bus will take you from the Shire’s Rest car park to the attraction (approximate 5-10 minute journey), as no cars are allowed on the property.

The tour was wonderful, with a lovely guide and plenty of time to stop and take photos! We were able to look around inside a hobbit hole! It was so detailed! A complimentary drink was included at the end! The atmosphere was jolly. This was a worthwhile visit!
