What to Expect
Ho Chi Minh City is the heart and soul of Vietnam. It's a bustling, dynamic center, the country’s largest city, the economic capital, and the cultural trendsetter. Within the teeming metropolis you’ll also find the timeless traditions and beauty of an ancient culture.
The streets, where much of the city's life takes place, are a jumble of street markets, shops, pavement cafés, stands-on-wheels, and vendors selling wares spread out on sidewalks. Experience the city and other area attractions on a 5-day tour that includes day trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels and My Tho in the Mekong Delta.
Day 1: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City: (Dinner)
When you arrive at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport you will be met and driven to your hotel. Enjoy a welcome dinner of traditional Vietnamese cuisine. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City at the Dragon Hotel or New World Saigon Hotel in a deluxe or superior room or similar accommodation.
Day 2: Ho Chi Minh–Cu Chi–Half-Day City Tour (Breakfast; Lunch)
A morning drive will take you to the famous Cu Chi tunnels, a 220-kilometer maze of underground passages, chambers, rooms, and booby traps used by both the Vietminh and the Viet Cong during the Vietnamese War. Watch a short introductory video on the construction of the tunnels and then explore the maze.
You’ll head back to Ho Chi Minh City for lunch and then your guide will show you some of the city’s highlights. Visit the Museum of War Remnants that provides a biased, but riveting, perspective of the American War, and see Notre Dame Catholic Church. Explore the huge Ben Thanh market, one of the liveliest areas of Ho Chi Minh City. The market is packed with every conceivable commodity. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 3: Ho Chi Minh–My Tho Day Trip (Breakfast; Lunch)
Today you’ll get a taste of exotic life in the Mekong Delta. Start the day early at 07:30 for the drive to Tien Giang. You’ll take a boat trip around Dragon, Unicorn, Tortoise, and Phoenix islets on the Tien River. See traditional Mekong Delta houses at Quoi An village and watch how the locals make handicrafts from the coconut trunks and shells.
Enjoy seasonal fruits, listen to traditional music, and take a horse cart along a village path, stopping at Ben Truc orchard to taste honey with tea or wine. Enjoy lunch at a local’s home on an islet and experience the friendliness and hospitability of the host. Visit a coconut candy workshop by boat and have a taste of this special candy.
Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, where the day’s tour ends at around 17:00. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 4: Relaxing and Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City (Breakfast)
After breakfast you’ll have an opportunity to visit a variety of shops that are within easy walking distance of each other.
Many are located along Dong Khoi, which used to be the trendy Rue Catinat in French colonial times. Close by are Hai Ba Trung and Le Loi, which are also worth a look. Off-the-peg clothing is always a good buy but even better is to have clothes made up by one of the many tailors. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
