What to Expect
Explore the fascinating Mekong Delta region on a 3-day private tour from Ho Chi Minh City. Discover floating markets, enjoy a variety of local dishes and visit a mangrove forest conservation area. Take in sweeping views from observation decks and more.
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Bentre – Cantho
You will be picked up at your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and then taken on a 2-hour drive to Ben Tre. On arrival at Hung Vuong pier you’ll board a boat for a cruise along the Ham Luong River (a branch of the Mekong) and stop off at various workplaces to see how the local economy works.
Take a walk around a small village and stop at a house where you’ll see people weaving mats on a hand loom – you can even have a go at weaving yourself! Take a bike ride or hop on a motorized rickshaw for a 15km fun ride through the beautiful countryside to Mr. Khanh’s house, where you’ll see an antique pottery collection.
Get back on your bike or your motorized rickshaw and continue your ride to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch of local dishes, such as elephant ear fish and river shrimp and an iced soft drink or beer.
After lunch, it’s time to relax on a row boat ride along the canals before returning to the big boat for a cruise back to Hung Vuong pier. Board the Co Chien ferry for Can Tho. Check in at a 3-star hotel for the night.
Day 2: Phong Dien and Cai Rang Floating Markets – Tra Su Conservation – Chau Doc
In the morning, hop on the van for the 15km drive to the Phong Dien district. You’ll take an arrow boat for a cruise to the unique floating markets of Phong Dien and Cai Rang. Just sit back on the boat, enjoy the morning coffee served by the local coffee boat and watch the trading going on from boat to boat.
After visiting the markets, your boat will speed up as it heads along the Mekong River, passing rural villages before you arrive at the Cai Rang floating market. Enjoy breakfast with a bowl of noodle soup ordered from the noodle soup boat. Cai Rang is much bigger and is more of wholesale market with larger and motored boats.
Next stop will be at a fruit orchard where you can enjoy tasting tropical fruits and learn more about the real life of the locals.
Return to your hotel for a short rest and check out at 10:00. Head out on a 60km drive to Long Xuyen to see a mysterious Noon Ceremony at a Cao Dai temple. After another drive you’ll stop to enjoy a late lunch of homemade specialties with a local family.
Embark on an arrow boat to take in breathtaking scenery and the wildlife habitats of the conservation area that comprises a thousand acres of mangrove forest surrounded by paddy fields. Take a short walk around the area on your own and climb up the observation deck for a better view of the conservation area and the thousands of storks and birds that nest there.
Drive to Chau Doc and check in at a 3-star hotel for the night. Dinner is on your own, and your guide can provide recommendations.
Day 3: Chau Doc – Ho Chi Minh City
After breakfast, you’ll drive up to the peak of Sam Mountain for spectacular views of paddy fields stretching to the border with Cambodia. Then you’ll enjoy a boat cruise through a village of floating houses, where fish are bred in their natural environment. Learn more about Cham culture while visiting a small village and its mosque.
On your 270km drive back to Ho Chi Minh City you’ll have breaks en route for lunch at a local restaurant and to try out the hammock cafes along the highway. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel by around 17:00.
