Read more about Hiroshima

Hiroshima is one of the most photogenic cities on the planet, whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just looking for the perfect snap to document your travels on your socials. These must-see places capture the essence of Hiroshima: its beauty, resilience, and cultural richness. From the panoramic views from Orizuru Tower or Mt. Misen to the serenity of the lush Shukkeien Garden and Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine, each unique, Instagrammable location is equal parts picture-perfect and packed with history. Run through my list of things to see and do in Hiroshima when you visit the city and you’ll discover iconic landmarks like the A-Bomb Dome and Hiroshima Castle, as well as the more hidden parts of the city, and leave with your heart and camera roll full.

From hearty bowls of ramen to sweet baked goods — via sardines, eel, and oysters — the food in Hiroshima is some of the most varied and delicious you’ll find in Japan. This is a city that doesn’t just celebrate the country’s most famous foods, it puts its own unique spin on them, be it extra spice, or a different cooking technique. So, whether you’re looking for a tasty snack on the go or a meal in a local izakaya (bar) that you’ll still be talking about in a decade, eating is right up there with the best things to do in Hiroshima. Best with an obligatory glass of sake on the side, here are the tastiest foods in Hiroshima to add to your to-eat list.

Miyajima packs a punch for its small size. Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Hiroshima, this island is home to Japan’s most photographed landmark: the “floating” torii of the Itsukushima Shrine. But there’s more to this UNESCO World Heritage site. Hike Mount Misen for epic panoramic views, wander ancient forests where deer roam free, and time travel through centuries of Japanese history and spirituality. Whether you’re after that perfect sunset shot of the torii gate or a deeper dive into local culture, Miyajima delivers. Just watch your snacks around the furry residents — they’re known to have a taste for tourists’ treats.
Hiroshima is one of Japan’s top destinations, if only to experience its spirit of resilience and renewal. This city, once devastated, now thrives as a beacon of hope and peace. Over three days in Hiroshima, you’ll traverse landscapes that juxtapose history’s darkest moments with vibrant urban life and natural beauty. From the A-Bomb Dome to the tranquil gardens and the mystical island of Miyajima, almost everything there is to do in Hiroshima offers a journey through time and solemn remembrance. Even local delicacies like okonomiyaki and oysters are symbols of the city’s rebirth. Whether drawn by history, culture, food, or scenery, prepare for an experience that will challenge perceptions and stir your soul.

What people are saying about Hiroshima
Overall rating
The guides (Issam and Myu) were very knowledgeable and friendly. We made several stops along the way (approx. 10 km) which helped on this very hot day. Lots of history, personal anecdotes and a few jokes to lighten the mood. What a great way to explore such a beautiful city!
Our guide told us part of his family's life story, which really touched us. Very impressive and supported by lots of facts and locations! We learned a lot on this tour. Got exactly the answers I was looking for. Thank you, Jacques de Serière.
Very nice tour of the city's most important sights. Our guide explained everything very well and answered all our questions. He also waited patiently for everyone and we had enough time to take photos and look around at our leisure.
Shin was the guide and was amazing from the start! He had such great insight and lived experience of Hiroshima and the effects of the A-Bomb. Great tour! Highly recommend.
Super fantastic, we didn’t expect to get a direct descendent from Hiroshima survivors but she was amazing. It’s a heavy subject but she kept it positive. Really just great
