This room is one of the few in original 18th-century style. The Duchess of Sutherland wrote, “I have never in my life seen so brilliant a sight,” and, frankly, neither have we.
The Hermitage’s claim to fame is the greatest global collection of Scythian gold. You’ll barely be able to pay attention to the guide when you see these Ancient Greek treasures.

What People Are Saying About Hermitage Museum
We were picked up by Daria from our hotel lobby, and spent the day with her (just the three of us) walking around St Petersburg. It was a fantastic introduction to everything the city has to offer - so useful to get a knowledgeable local to provide those additional details that a guide book could never tell you. Would 100% recommend this to anyone visiting the city, especially given the amount of people that speak very little English.
Mischa and the guide were right on time to pick us at the hotel. First we visited the Diamond room in the Hermitage, really fantastic. There was a Russian guide but this was translated by our guide. She was very relaxed, and asked us if we wanted to change anything in the program. At this time of the year, you could perfectly see the paintings and other things. At the end we got a little present. Really an experience to come back!
We absolutely loved our 4-hour walking tour of the Hermitage Museum. Our guide Elena was so knowledgeable and steered us carefully through the absolutely gigantic maze of rooms. She brought everything to life and we really felt like we had a better undratanding of not only the Winter Palace buildings and the artefacts in the Hermitage but also Russian history as a whole. Book it, you won't regret it - it was the highlight of our visit.
Lana was simply incredible! Extremely friendly and very informative which was exactly what I wanted. No cookie cutter guide here - she brought her own twist to the tour, and answered all our questions. I felt bad for everyone else who didn't have her as their tour guide.
This tour I would say was essential if you want to go to the Hermitage. We did beat the queues which even in autumn became longer. The early part where few people we in the palace with us was very special. Irena was terrific with her knowledge of the palace and the art.
